Coming up on wusa9 news, baby boomers and alzheimers in todays family health, a baby boomer population will increase the number of people with alzheimers disease. The Alzheimers Association International Conference is going on right now here in the district. To talk more about some of the new findings being released this week is dr. James fixel, director of the inova center. Thank you very much for being here with us. A new more than 28 million americans affected by alzheimers in the next 30 years. Thats a large number. How much of a burden is this going to place on medicare . It will abhuge burden in terms of the direct cost caring for those people, not only caring for dementia but all the complications that come as a part of that when people become immobile. How far away are we from solutions that may be able to slow the onset of the disease or prevent it in fact. I fish i could say we were really close. The biggest thing happening in the field is a better understanding of the early manifestations of the disease, mile markers, and a big thought about why some of our treatments have failed till now, is maybe were implementing them too late in the course of the disease. So theres been a huge amount of research on Early Detection of alzheimers. Thats really only used in the context of clinical trials. But hopefully as we intervene earlier and earlier, well find something that will be able to alter the course and slow the progression. I also want to talk about the disparity. Between men and women, women are at greatest risk for alzheimers than men. Yes. Weve always known theres a higher prevalence of alzheimers in women than men. There have been a couple of papers that have come out in the conference this week showing that really happens early on in the disease as well. One study out of duke, dr. Katherine lynn, showed patients with mci, mild Cognitive Impairment which is often but not always a precursor to alzheimers are twice as likely to progress to alzheimers if theyre women than if theyre men. Of course with all the rain around lately, the mold spores are back. Well be back telling you how be president obama leaves for africa this week to attend the Global Entrepreneurship summit in kenya, his thirds and probably his final trip to africa as. Here with us is the bishop who represents most of east africa and is the most senior african bishop with the catholic church. Your excellency, thank you very much for being here. The president is going to the home of his fathers birth. A lot of people are criticizing and or applauding the visit saying it may not be the best idea. What do you expect from the visit . What would you like him to accomplish while hes on the continent in kenya . I would hope by going to kenya, he would speak about peace on the continent, but i would like to tell also, mr. President , dont go with peace only. Speak up about justice. Give people their rights their dignity, their god given rights. One of the reasons while youre here in the United States while he goes to africa, you said youre here to fight and fight before the u. N. What is the fight about . The fight is to tell the u. N. That human life is more important than all the wealth of this world because we were all created in the image of god. If we are going to tie politics to the lives of our people, then politics takes the last step. The first step is human beings and just to say that they cannot take [indiscernible] because they have got to respect the independence and the sovereignty of a regime that is intended to kill its own people. Thats immoral. Excellency, politics always creeps into even the best of causes. Theres concern that the president is going to talk about gay rights while hes in kenya and theres an alliance of minister, 700, who says he should leave the preaching to them. Do you think this is something he should bring up and what would be the reaction in a country that is still mostly muslim . I would advise the president not to touch this subject in africa, but this is not the primary issue of africa. This is not a priority for us. This is a priority for the United States. So this is homeland issue. When he goes to other countries according to our traditions and to our customs, he is our guest. And we always say if im a guest at your house, you dont come to my house and insult me. You respect me and i respect you because you are in my house. But when you go back to your house, that is the United States, you can say what you want because this will not affect you. Bishop, thank you for being in our house this afternoon. Drugs, weapons and wildlife tracking, those are the hot topics of a new exhibit at the crime museum on 7th street northwest. Here with a sneak peak is rachel, the museum manager. Thank you for being with us. Ive been on to the spy. I heard of the dea. I didnt know the crime museum was right in the same area. Yes. Were right across from the Verizon Center downtown. Weve been open for seven years. During that time we try to stay as current as possible with not only history but also things that are going on in the news. One of the ways that we do that is through our temporary exhibits. So we partner with outside organizations and agencies to crime that the public maybe wouldnt necessarily think about. Wildlife trafficking is one i wouldnt necessarily think about because weve been talking so much about Human Trafficking. How big a business, how big a crime problem is wildlife trafficking . Wildlife trafficking is an area that is connected to many other areas of crime. Its a 2 billion industry connected to drugs and Human Trafficking and weapons trade because compared to these other crimes, its a lowrisk crime of getting cut or being prosecuted. And just in the past three years, over 100,000 elephants have been killed in africa. Just this year over 400 rhinos have been killed in south africa. Its not getting better. Its getting worse. So with this exhibit were trying to bring attention to that, to the general public that doesnt necessarily know how big of a problem that it is. That exhibit is going through february of next year, but there are so many things that you deal with as we said, drugs, weapons, domestic terrorism, hate crime, boarder issues. Its like the museum is filled with Current Events that you cant keep up with the topics in the news in the museum. And people ask you about that, dont they . They do. We try to stay as current as possible but as a museum, we are object driven so we display things that we have the objects for. A lot of times people ask about some headline things. Why dont you have this. Its like, you dont have things yet, we dont have stuff because theres a trial going okay ongoing investigations. But people have a real interest the topic and wanting to know sort of behindthescenes. Rachel, thank you for telling us about. Im sorry we havent gotten into things interesting for the kids. You have a csi summer camp for the kids. Going on right now. Go check it out. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for watching. Thats it for us at noon.
