Red squirrel conservation project gets the go ahead NORTH Yorkshire is set to get it's first red squirrel enclosure. The Yorkshire Arboretum at Castle Howard has been granted planning permission by Ryedale District Council to begin its red squirrel project and it will mean a small group of native red squirrels are brought to live at the arboretum in a large, tree-filled enclosure, as part of its mission to promote healthy trees and healthy woodland. Arboretum Director Dr John Grimshaw said: "We’re delighted that we can now go ahead with this exciting project, which will enable visitors to encounter this iconic native animal, which has long been extinct from this area, while learning about its role in our woodlands."
