The termination of a scholar threatens free speech and faculty governance (opinion)

The case of Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, a noted Shakespearean scholar and, until recently, the Ronni Lacroute Chair in Shakespeare Studies at Linfield University, has quickly drawn attention to how a university administration and its Board of Trustees can feel entitled to bypass due process and substitute for it corporate protocols that even as such seem ethically problematic. Pollack-Pelzner, who has been a sharp critic of Linfield’s responses to sexual harassment and who has raised serious charges of anti-Semitism, has been fired for being “insubordinate.”

The Oregonian, Pollack-Pelzner is known as being “a public advocate for students and faculty who had complained about alleged sexual abuse by board trustees.” He has also publicly reported instances of anti-Semitic statements by Linfield president Miles Davis. ....

OIT faculty strike enters second week - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2


KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Technical Institute continues to negotiate with a union representing teachers and faculty.
The faculty union at the Oregon Institute of Technology went on strike at the beginning of last week, making it the first public college faculty to ever go on strike in Oregon.
The strike, organized through Oregon Tech – American Association of University Professors (OT-AAUP), said it’s demanding fair wages, secure benefits and a reasonable, clearly defined workload.
“While it’s disappointing some faculty have chosen to walk away from their classes despite a generous offer from Oregon Tech,” the school said in a press release, “the university is prepared to continue operations with minimal disruption to classes or services.” ....

Michael W. Friedlander, professor emeritus of physics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Thursday, April 29, 2021, in St. Louis. He was 92.
Born Nov. 15, 1928, in Cape Town, South Africa, Friedlander earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with honors, from the University of Cape Town and his PhD from the University of Bristol, England. He remained at Bristol as a junior faculty member, then came to Washington University in 1956 to replicate the cosmic ray laboratory that he had known at Bristol. Friedlander was promoted to full professor at Washington University in 1967. ....

Currently the second-in-command at the University of Illinois system, Wilson boasts some two decades of experience as an academic administrator and has a research and teaching background in communications studies.
