On Friday 22 January, Estonia called an informal high-level virtual meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss media freedom in Belarus. The meeting built on a previous UN Security Council meeting initiated by Estonia and held on 4 September with a focus on human rights in Belarus.
“In addition to protesters, representatives of free media – journalists, cameramen, bloggers, anyone covering the events on the ground – have been turned into a target for the government’s repressions. It is alarming how the Belarusian authorities have persecuted, beaten and arrested representatives of the media,” Foreign Minister Reinsalu said. ....

Today, Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu met with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya who is on a visit to Estonia. At the meeting, the foreign minister presented Tsikhanouskaya with the Order of Merit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for her courage in standing up for the freedom of the Belarusian people.
At the meeting in the Foreign Ministry, Urmas Reinsalu expressed his support for Tsikhanouskaya and the people of Belarus, stating that Estonia would continue to keep the issue of Belarus on the agenda of international organisations. “I am impressed by the bravery of the people of Belarus. Despite repressions by the authorities, they continue to protest peacefully for democracy and their fundamental rights. It is crucial to end the violence, release political prisoners and launch a political dialogue, which would result in new, free and democratic elections.” ....

Arriving from the European Union, the European Economic Area or the Schengen area
A 10-day restriction on the freedom of movement applies to passengers entering Estonia from a country in the European Union, European Economic Area and the Schengen area with an infection rate above 150 persons per 100 000 inhabitants in the past 14 days.
For the 25-31/01 period, the restriction applies to passengers arriving from the following countries:
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia , Liechtenstein, Lithuania , Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The infection rate of the Vatican is 0 b ....

On Wednesday 20 January, Paul Teesalu, Estonia’s first ambassador to the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta or the Order of Malta, presented his credentials to Fra´ Marco Luzzago, the Lieutenant of the Grand Master. Ambassador Teesalu resides in Rome.
The presentation ceremony was also attended by Grand Commander H.E. Fra’ Ruy Gonçalo do Valle Peixoto de Villas-Boas, Grand Chancellor Albrecht von Boeselager and Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Stefano Ronca.
