Families swam in the lake at East Fork State Park Monday afternoon despite a health department warning that the water could make them sick or cause rashes from contact with their skin.
“Read the signs,” said Edith Campbell, who stopped by on Monday but didn’t swim. “There’s a big sign there — a red sign — that tells you what’s in the water.” ....

On Tuesday, January 26th 2021, David Wayne West, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend, passed from this earth to the heavens to be with many other friends and relatives at the age of 66.
David “Hot Rod” West was born on November 15, 1954 in Sinton, TX to Clois Melton West and Anna Lou Keck.
He married the love of his life, Edith Campbell, October 20, 1972 and they were married for 48 years. They had two daughters, Cathy Jo and LesLee, and one son Walker.
David was a hardworking, loving person that would do anything for anyone that needed him. He loved to fish, hunt and BBQ for many years. He attended school in Ingleside where he loved to play football and baseball. ....

Buddy R. Elliott, Sr


Buddy R. Elliott, Sr., 86, on the morning of January 30, 3021, joined his wife, Lorraine Elliott in their heavenly home. He was a native of Carter County, and was the son of the late Isaac and Edith Campbell Elliott. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Bill Elliott. He served in the United States Army. He was a truck driver. Buddy loved to socialize with numerous life long friends and attend church.
Those left to cherish his memory are United States Air Force Lt. Col. Buddy Elliott, Jr, (Kris) son of Fort Walton Beach, Fl, Peggy (Jamie) Hernandez, daughter of Elizabeth and Donna Ward, daughter of Johnson City, TN. Three Grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In recent years, he considered himself lucky to include in his family, Christy and Kelvin Cannon and their superdog Jake. Jake was a bright light in Buddy’s life. He is also survived by his sister, Emma Wilson and brother, George Elliott. ....

Jan. 16, 1890: The Comet advised readers, “Study the history of current events; make careful comparisons of the fluctuations in price, in demand and in supply, in order to guide your own operations.”
Jan. 16, 1902: The Comet opined, “If Rev. R.J. Cooke does not soon take back what he said about the Daughters of the Confederacy inspiring anarchy there won’t be enough left of him to make a good roast.”
Jan. 16, 1914: The Chattanooga Daily Times reported on a tragic fire in Johnson City.
“‘Biltless,’ the handsome home of Col. Cy H. Lyle, editor of the Johnson City Comet, was completely destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon. The house was built fourteen years ago, and cost $20,000. Malcolm Lyle, a young son of Mr. Lyle, put some shucks on the fire in the sitting room and sparks from these fell on the roof. The furniture was saved. Only $2,500 insurance was carried on the property.” ....
