That, too, is a thing. And thanks to the enthusiasm and research of Margaret Gillon of California, there is now an incredible new resource available to all at the Buddhist Opera website. It all began innocently and fairly enough. Gillon is a fan of the renowned writer on Buddhism Stephen Batchelor, perhaps best known for his book The Awakening of the West: The Encounter of Buddhism and Western Culture (Parallax Press 1994). She learned that Batchelor is also an artist with a habit of making a collage of found objects each time he writes a book, each collage taking exactly the same length of time as writing the book. This fact fascinated Gillon. And then she learned that he had written an opera, called ....

(Photo courtesy of Opera Siam) Opera Siam presents a traditional Candlelight Carol Concert on Christmas Eve tomorrow from 6pm to 7.30pm at the Banyan Tree Hotel s Ballroom, Sathon Road. This is a genuine, traditional European carol concert by Bangkok s multinational, multicultural Calliope Chamber Choir and Cherubim Children s Choir under the direction of maestro Somtow Sucharitkul. A staple of English choir culture, the format of Nine Lessons and Carols was solidified by the annual Christmas Eve event at King s College, Cambridge, which is broadcast by the BBC internationally every year. The Bangkok event is essentially the same formula, with carols from the 14th-century to the present sung by soloists and choristers of both choirs. The audience will be able to join in some of them too. ....
