Guwahati among 2 Asian cities in zero-waste challenge


U.K.-based international NGO launched the challenge to find entrepreneurs with innovative ideas to help reduce or recycle waste and create green employment opportunities
Guwahati is among two urban centres in Asia and three across the continents featuring in a zero-waste cities challenge launched by U.K.-based international NGO WasteAid to find entrepreneurs with innovative ideas that help reduce or recycle and create green employment opportunities.
The only other Asian city featuring in this challenge is Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City. The third is Johannesburg in South Africa.
“The competition is part of a programme to encourage a circular economy and inclusive livelihood opportunities in these cities. Two winners in each city will be awarded €10,000 and mentoring support to help make their idea a reality,” WasteAid’s Michelle Wilson said. ....

A startup in Brazil is producing footwear made entirely from plastic waste in the ocean.
Even when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country hard, the sprouting company kept working towards their goal of collecting 2 million plastic bottles by 2022.
Bernardo Pedroso is the founder and CEO of Ocean Refresh. Growing up in Brazil, his mother was one of the country s first surfers, so he practically spent all his time on the beach.
That beach today is littered all over with plastic.
When I started Ocean Refresh, it wasn t about the product. It was never about the product, the product was a result of the hard work we re doing to create something with the rubbish that s already there, he says. ....

I am that person who has a dozen airtight containers taking up room in my fridge because I just can t bear to throw out food.
I save spoonfuls of cooked rice, a couple of broccoli
florets and half-used tubs of tomato paste.
Sadly, however, a lot of them sit there for so long that they have been rendered utterly unrecognisable by the time I get around to throwing them out.
I ended up clearing out the fridge feeling like an abject failure. That food could have been put to good use, if only I was more organised. Something had to change. And that something was me. ....
