The seaside city of Pismo Beach has a new law enforcement leader.
Chief Jeff Smith is now at the helm of the police department that serves more than 8,400 residents and upwards of 40,000 visitors, depending on the day of the week.
He s also in charge of the department s 24 officers.

US Army chief warns of possible al-Qaeda return in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON: Gen Mark Milley, the US military s top officer, outlined on Wednesday a “worst-case” scenario in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of foreign troops, warning of a potential civil war and return of al-Qaeda, foreign media reported.
Tough situation, no good answers to any of it, Gen Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Sedona Forum, hosted by the McCain Institute.
President Joe Biden this month announced all US forces would quit Afghanistan by September 11. Other foreign nations with troops in the country will also leave.
[In] the worst-case analysis, you have a potential collapse of the government, a potential collapse of the military, you have civil war, you have all the humanitarian catastrophe that goes with it and the potential for the return of al-Qaeda sometime down the road,” Gen Milley said. ....

Controversial Rotorua councillor Reynold Macpherson is facing three new code of conduct complaints, including one from the council chief executive.
The new complaints relate to three of his social media posts on the Rotorua Residents and Ratepayers Facebook page.
The first was about a wastewater leak near Ngongotahā on March 2 - the same post mayor Steve Chadwick demanded Macpherson apologise for at a March 4 council committee meeting.

Rotorua Lakes Council chief executive Geoff Williams wrote to mayor Steve Chadwick on March 5 saying the post contained serious accusations . ....
