An Post celebrating contribution of Cork arctic explorers with launch of new stamps today  Five of the eight men commemorated in the new set are from Cork.  Edward Bransfield from Ballincurra, Patrick Keohane from Courtmacsherry, Robert Forde from Bandon and brothers Mortimer and Tim McCarthy from Kinsale took part in epic expeditions in the 1800s and the early 1900s.  Edward Bransfield  Edward Bransfield was born in Ballinacurra, near Midleton in 1785. In the summer of 1803, he was press ganged into the Royal Navy by British Sailors and fought in the British war against Napoleon. He survived and rose through the ranks to eventually become Ship’s Master.

First coronavirus cases hit Antarctica

The pandemic has reached every continent on Earth.  Chilean authorities announced that at least 58 people at two military bases in Antarctica, or on a navy ship that went to the continent, tested positive for the novel coronavirus.  So far, no other country with a presence in Antarctica has publicly reported other cases.  There are 36 coronavirus cases at the Gen.
