The Nigerian Government has expressed its commitment to improving diplomatic relations with Canada, in a bid to boost the fight against insecurity.
This was disclosed by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Maj Gen Bashir Salihi Magashi (rtd), in a meeting with the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Nicolas Simard, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, on Friday.
The Defence Minister added that Nigeria’s relationship with the North American nation progressively and sustainably culminated into the formation a bi-national commission in April 2012 which was beneficial to both countries.
He added that the FG was seeking Canada’s support to bring an end to extremism and insurgency in Nigeria, adding that Nigeria needed Canada’s assistance in driving national aspirations. Canada has shown interest in increasing both bilaterally and multilateral cooperation with Nigeria and subsequently increases the volume of trade with the country.
Addressing journalists in Abuja recently to mark the Canada independence from the British on July 1, 1867, the acting High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Nicolas Simard, said: “We look forward to broadening and deepening our cooperation with Nigeria both bilaterally and multilaterally.”
Nigeria presently stands as the second largest trade partner of Canada on the African continent, exceeded only by South Africa.
The Canadian high commissioner said: “Nigeria is Canada’s second most important partner in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Canadian government has announced that it is “providing $26.95 million in new humanitarian assistance funding to help meet the basic needs of conflict-affected populations” in North-east Nigeria.
The Canadian government said this in a statement by its embassy in Nigeria on Wednesday evening.
“This funding will help provide food assistance, treatment for acute malnutrition and other critical health care, safe water and sanitation, and protection services.”
