We had a beautiful 1990 Alfa Romeo Spider in for its spring service recently. It sported a set of tires that looked relatively new, but they were actually 12 years old, according to their manufacturer dates. So the question that day was: How do I advise this customer? Do we really have to throw out this set of perfectly good-looking tires?
I’ve heard it over and over again. “A tire is garbage six years after its manufacturer date.” But is it true? Many times, a vehicle comes in with dated tires, yet they look decent. We always closely examine the tire for any damage, dry rot and UV cracks. We recommend discarding when they’re visibly worn or cracked, but I’ve always been skeptical about this six-year rule. ....

Ontario’s government is weighing a series of tougher COVID-19 measures – including extending its stay-at-home order – as the province faces warnings it could soon be struggling with up to 18,000 new infections a day.
The government, which was mulling new restrictions to contain the virus at a cabinet meeting late Thursday, is set to unveil staggering new predictions from its COVID-19 science advisory table. ....

The she-cession is fading, employment is rebounding and the economy is getting back on its feet. So, what’s an activist government to do?
When the federal Liberals promised “ocean to ocean to ocean” child care last fall, they pointed to one of the most alarming aspects of the pandemic economy – the outsized losses in women’s employment – as a key reason to enact what would be one of Ottawa’s biggest social-program initiatives in decades. ....

Smart's 'Paint It Forward' campaign serves as mental self-care for DavSur students, teachers

April 16, 2021
THE ongoing pandemic is wearing down students and teachers who have been struggling to push through with learning in the new normal. At times like these, art becomes a respite for the tired mind and the weary soul. After more than a year of hunkering down in their homes because of limited mobility, the academic community in Davao del Sur sees Smart’s Paint It Forward as an effective way to promote mental wellness among student-artists.
Paint it Forward is a wall mural design contest organized by PLDT’s wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. that aims to involve local artists in advocating the sustainability programs of the community and to serve as therapy for the community that has been fatigued by varying quarantine rules. ....

Ontario could face more than 15,000 new COVID-19 infections a day in June, new modelling from its science advisers warns – even if the province vaccinates 100,000 people a day.
The projections, released by the province’s external COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, say that under “weak” public health measures, new cases could crest at more than 30,000 a day by early June. With “moderate” measures, they could range from 10,000 to more than 15,000. With “strong” measures in place for as long as six weeks, they could be contained below 10,000 a day. ....
