Deconstructing Jackie

Deconstructing Jackie
In an interview in the
Guardian in 2017, the celebrated rationalist Daniel Dennett declared: “I think what the postmodernists did was truly evil. They are responsible for the intellectual fad that made it respectable to be cynical about truth and facts.” If Dennett’s anathema was heard in the afterlife by Jacques Derrida, who died in 2004 renowned as the progenitor of what is commonly described as postmodernism, his shade must have smiled.
Nothing is more characteristic of evangelical rationalists than the demonological discourse of fundamentalist religion. But what can “pure evil” mean for those who claim to have exorcised all traces of the supernatural in their thinking? In the same interview, Dennett describes himself, evidently without irony, as “an eternal optimist”. By what magic does he imagine unadulterated malevolence can be banished from the world? Such enemies of postmodernism beg to be deconstructed whenever they ope ....

The AstraZeneca jab's journey from production plant to vaccination centre

The AstraZeneca jab s journey from production plant to vaccination centre
The pharmaceutical giant relies on a complex network of partners to produce, bottle and distribute vaccine doses. But how do they link together?

On 18 January Boris Johnson opened the Oxbox production plant in Oxford. The factory was originally intended to meet growing demand for the cell and gene therapy specialist Oxford Biomedica’s products. But last September, the firm signed an agreement with AstraZeneca to use the facility to produce Covid-19 vaccines instead.
With about 250 staff and covering 84,000 sq ft, Oxbox has been manufacturing vaccines for the UK since October. Every day at Oxbox, as well as at other facilities across the UK, Oxford Biomedica scientists work to produce enough AstraZeneca vaccine to meet the UK government’s order of 100 million doses. In order to meet such a challenge, AstraZeneca has established a network o ....

Dan Bongino, Others Making a Play for Rush Limbaugh's Audience

AP Photo/Andrew Harnik
There is one thing that is true, no matter what comes next: There will never, ever be another Rush Limbaugh.
That is largely by design, too. Rush built an entire industry as he built his show, and because it was his own business model, he owned it in ways that other hosts simply could never. That’s why he was able to do everything he wanted to do, and his charisma was such that audiences kept coming back, whether they agreed with him or not.
His death left a huge hole in the airwaves. The 12-3 daily slot will not be filled by anyone who is remotely like him. But, there are players moving in to make their own names in that spot. Last night, one of those names became official: Dan Bongino will be on the air every day from 12-3, courtesy of Westwood One. ....

How to remake Britain: Why we need community capitalism

How to remake Britain: Why we need community capitalism
A network of civic institutions should form the base of the foundational economy, locally rooted and citizen-led.
By Andy Haldane
When asked how to define economic success, I usually say “good work at a good wage, everywhere”. On those criteria, the UK economy is failing many people. Around ten million are in insecure work. Around double that have not had their inflation-adjusted pay rise for a decade. And differences in wages across regions of the UK are greater than at any time since the late-Victorian era.
In his fascinating essay, Roberto Unger reaches broadly the same conclusion. What is often called the foundational economy – local jobs in local communities supporting local spending – is stuck in a low skills-low productivity-low wage equilibrium. ....

Are UK police forces institutionally misogynist?

Last July, amid a global wave of Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality, the Metropolitan Police commissioner Cressida Dick claimed her force was not institutionally racist.
It was four days after the British athlete Bianca Williams was stopped by Met officers while driving to her home in west London, handcuffed and separated from her baby son. She called the incident “racial stereotyping and prejudice”.
Yet regardless of the evidence of disproportionate targeting of black people by officers, Dick insisted there was no “collective failing” or “massive systemic problem” with racism in the police.
There appears to be a similar attitude to misogyny in the force. The former Nottinghamshire Police chief Sue Fish – whose force recognised misogyny as a hate crime in 2016 – and the Centre for Women’s Justice lawyer Debaleena Dasgupta have accused police of institutional misogyny. ....
