As reported last month, in light of the pandemic, the planning department provided guidance to community planning groups (CPGs) on how to handle elections this year since face-to-face meetings are simply not practicable. The options ranged from mail-in voting to online voting or simply postponing the elections until the local state of emergency is lifted. 
Due to the light at the end of the tunnel provided by the vaccine rollout, the College Area Community Planning Board (CACPB) & Council voted to postpone the election. It is anticipated that the state of emergency will be lifted by the end of the summer, God willing. You will be updated as we get closer to the target horizon.  ....

Kitchin awarded Beacon® Scholarship for Rural America


HILLSBOROUGH – Carrot-Top Industries, Inc., a trusted industry leader providing institutions and businesses with patriotic and customized solutions, announced this week the winner of its Spring 2021 Beacon® Scholarship for Rural America. Emma Kitchin of Newland was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to be used to help offset the cost of her higher education expenses.
Kitchin will be attending Davidson College, in Davidson, N.C., as a freshman in Fall 2021. She will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After college, she hopes to get a therapist’s license to help troubled youth with trauma and mental disorders.
“My passion to help others and the environment motivates me,” Kitchin said. “I lead through becoming a friend to those around me, and I use laughter and a shared goal to inspire others to work together.” ....

Volunteers convert unused building into a library, hold book festival
Book lovers welcomed 2021 with a book fair in Quetta. In 2019, some youngsters had converted the non-operational building of a local hospital into the Lore Karez Sariyab Library.
The three-day Sariyab Literary Festival and Book Fair (February 21 to 23) brought together teachers, students and a general book reading public from across the province.
The festival started on February 21, the Mother Languages Day, with a poetry recitations gathering. Many renowned poets presented their poetry in Balochi, Brahvi and Urdu and received appreciation from a lively audience. There were six discussion sessions at which issues like youth activism and leadership, career counselling, importance of reading book and female education and empowerment were discussed first among panelists and then by the panelists and the remaining participants. CARRABELLE, Fla. (WTXL) — It’s a hidden gem buried inside Florida’s Forgotten Coast.
“It is 103 feet tall. It has 138 stairs. It’s one of a number of lighthouses that has an exoskeleton which is a structural framework,“ said Steve Allen, the President of the Carrabelle Lighthouse Association.
Allen has been with the organization for six years. The Crooked River Lighthouse has been a fixture along U.S. Highway 98 in Franklin County for more than a century. It once guided sailors. Now, it’s a museum filled with stories. ....
