Italian lab develops monoclonal antibodies, one of the most effective Covid-19 treatments

Tucked in the Tuscan hills around Siena in Italy, a research lab has come up with an antibody treatment for Covid-19 that its developers say will be 80 times more potent than the one given to former U.S. President Donald Trump in his most critical days in hospital last year.
The therapy is derived from the blood of people who’ve recovered from Covid, and relies on 453 different antibodies. It will also be administered as a single shot rather than a drawn-out infusion, which has been the norm for similar drugs. Clinical trials of about 3,000 doses produced so far started in Italy Thursday, and a roll out for general use could be approved as early as this summer. ....

The Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) Group has issued a warning for a marine and beach threat between Port Charles and Whiritoa on the Coromandel Peninsula, including the Firth of Thames.
It follows two separate large earthquakes in the Kermadec Islands region this morning.
There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, small boats and anyone in or near the water close to shore due to unusually strong currents and unpredictable water surges. ....

The shortlists for the Ockham NZ Book Awards, announced this week, revealed one big and long-awaited surprise.

(1.25pm) GNS Science has downgraded tsunami warnings for New Zealand, advising the largest waves have now passed. A National Emergency Management Agency release says the threat level s now downgraded to a beach and marine threat for all areas that were previously under land and marine threat. It says all people who were evacuated can now return. The advice remains for all areas under beach and marine threat, to stay off beach and shore areas.
Doubtless Bay residents in the Far North reporting seeing a surge of water come into the harbour. The surge came!, one resident posted on social media. Over the past hour a strong surge has been flowing into Mangonui Harbour. No tsunami wave as such but more like a strong flowing river stirring up the mud and sand in the harbour. ....
