MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Alabama senators could vote on a lottery bill this week as lawmakers try to get the issue of gambling with or without casinos before state voters for the first time since 1999.
Republican Sen. Jim McClendon of Springville said he hopes to get a Senate vote on his bill that would authorize a lottery where tickets could be sold at stores, kiosks and through a phone app.
The Senate Tourism Committee approved the bill last month, but it has yet to get a floor vote as negotiations continue over whether to include casinos. Earlier this session, a proposal to start a state lottery and up to 10 casinos failed by two votes in the Alabama Senate. ....

Albany County Legislator George Langdon announced his resignation following backlash over homophobic remarks he made at an event in Voorheesville that were caught on tape.
Langdon released the following statement on Monday afternoon.
During the past several days, I have taken time to reflect and consider how to best serve our community moving forward. It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to resign my seat at the Albany County Legislature.
I again express my sincerest apologies to all those who were hurt by my rash and thoughtless statements. It was never my intention to single-out or target anyone. I truly believe every individual should have the right to life and liberty in their pursuit of happiness. ....

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Montgomery police are investigating after a hostage situation and shooting Monday morning.
According to Capt. Saba Coleman, officer and medics were called around 4:30 a.m. to the 2000 block of Rexford Road after a report of a shooting. When they arrived, officers found a woman who had non-life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound.
Coleman says the woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
After the shooting, Coleman says the suspect abducted another woman from the home and fled in a vehicle. ....

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) An Alabama veteran who has met all of his parole conditions is fighting to avoid additional time behind bars after state officials say they mistakenly released him early.
The Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles has voided 53-year-old Jerry Lett s parole and says he needs to be arrested again and incarcerated, the Montgomery Advertiser reports. State officials say under a law passed in 2019, Lett did not serve the minimum amount of time needed to be eligible for early parole.
He was due to turn himself in on Friday, but a judge granted him a temporary reprieve. ....
