JACKSON, Miss. (WDAM) - The Mississippi State Department of Health reports the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state has risen to 272,600.
MSDH reported 2,186 COVID-19 cases and 38 additional deaths on Friday, bringing the state total to 272,662 cases and 5,983 deaths.
One death was reported from the Pine Belt as it comes from the Wayne County area. Another death was reported from Perry County that happened between the dates of Dec. 5, 2020, and Jan. 22, 2021.
Positive test results may have been made during the past several days and represent individuals who became ill a week ago or more. ....

Coronavirus in Mississippi: 1,804 cases, 28 deaths reported Thursday

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,804 new cases of the coronavirus and 28 coronavirus-related deaths on Thursday.
Since the virus hit the state in March, a total of 270,476 cases and 5,945 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.
More Mississippians have now died in January than any month since the state reported its first COVID-19 case in March.
The total number of coronavirus-related deaths for January is 1,129, according to state data. The previous record for coronavirus-related deaths in a single month was 983 during December. 
State health officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs warned on Twitter earlier this month that January was likely to be the worst month for COVID-19 deaths to this point. ....

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - South Jones Elementary School students started virtual learning Thursday.
According to the Jones County School District, the school had three COVID-19 outbreaks this week.
Superintendent Tommy Parker said South Jones Elementary reported three or more positive cases in three of its grade levels. Based on guidance from the Mississippi State Department of Health, he said the school must close in-person learning for the next 10 days to reduce the spread of the virus. ....
