Mercedes Benz EV: Watch out, Tesla: Mercedes-Benz unveils an electric 'sibling' of S-Class luxury sedan

LONDON: Daimler AG on Thursday unveiled the electric sibling of its flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class luxury sedan, taking the fight to market-leader Tesla Inc in the battle for market share as electric car sales take off.
The EQS is the first in a family of Mercedes-Benz cars built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform built from the ground up. It will go on sale in Europe and the United States in August, then in China in January.
Sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in the European Union almost trebled to over 1 million vehicles last year, accounting for more than 10% of overall sales. ....

The Whanganui Fire Station was busy on Friday as members of the public brought their electric blankets in to be tested before winter.
An electric blanket that had recently caught fire was on display on the station wall.
Whanganui local Donna Plimmer brought three blankets to get tested this year.

China's Geely targets slice of premium electric car market with 'startup' brand Zeekr

NINGBO, China/BEIJING (Reuters) -Chinese automaker Geely, owner of Volvo Cars, on Thursday launched a high-end electric vehicle (EV) brand named Zeekr, targeting China’s growing appetite for premium EVs that has boosted sales for Tesla and Chinese peer Nio.
Parent Zhejiang Geely Holding Group and Geely Automobile said last month they would jointly invest 2 billion yuan ($306 million) in the new venture, seeking to position Zeekr as a startup under Geely group, also known overseas for its 9.7% stake in Germany’s Daimler AG.
The price tags for Zeekr cars will be around 300,000 yuan, and Flynn Chen, Zeekr’s vice president, said the brand will explore new sales and marketing methods, including allowing customers to subscribe to car-using rights and offering a stake in the company to car buyers. ....

Croatian postal delivery workers get electric mopeds

ZAGREB, 15 April 2021 – Croatian Post has expanded its vehicle fleet after the acquisition of 26 new electric mopeds.
Croatian Post’s “green” fleet of vehicles is continuously expanding every year, and with the new mopeds there will be a total of 246 electric vehicles, of which 40 are four-wheelers, in the fleet.
The maximum speed of the new mopeds is 45 km / h, while the range with one charge is 98 kilometres. By using electric mopeds, emissions will be reduced by almost 20 tonnes per year.

Funds for the purchase of electric mopeds are co-financed by grants from the Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency. The mopeds will be used in narrow city centres and on islands where gas stations are significantly away from post offices. ....
