Waterford FC have informed the FAI that they will not be playing Sligo Rovers this weekend. The club have decided to forfeit their Premier Division meeting with Rovers which was scheduled to take place this Saturday. A senior squad member tested positive for covid-19 last week and several close contacts within the first team meant that the team could not take the field for the visit of Drogheda to the RSC. The U19 team were sent out to play The Drogs last Saturday, with the result telling a tale of what happens when men play boys. The full time score from the RSC saw the visitors claim a healthy 7 nil victory. ....

Waterford, Ireland / WLR May 8, 2021 8:31 AM Waterford FC is to field its under 19 squad in today’s home fixture at the RSC against Drogheda FC. In a statement released last night the club said two of the senior squad players were deemed close contacts of a confirmed case of Covid-19. Although a ‘wide testing programme’ had yielded no positive tests, the decision was made to stand down the entire squad due to a ‘public safety ethos’. Rather than call off the game, the club, which is languishing at the bottom of the league, will give the game time to the Under-19s. ....
For the time being, Blues Academy boss Mike Geoghegan will take charge of the team while a new manager is found. Geoghegan has confirmed that Brian Murphy will make his return to the team, with a view towards playing a more attractive style of football. “My first conversation was with Brian to see where he thought where he was. The style of play I want to play will dictate – maybe an experienced goalkeeper. Even though Paul has done brilliantly the last five matches – it just dictates maybe a goalkeeper that comes in, has been there and is prepared to take a risk on decisions knowing that it won’t go against him because he’s been around the block.” ....
