MONTREUX, Switzerland (AP) — The deceptions, distrust and divisions in European soccer erupted in public on Monday between teams and even within the clubs breaking away to form a Super League that could leave them and their players outcasts in the global game.
Condemnation of the 12 rebels clubs from England, Spain and Italy even came from Prince William, who followed the British government in railing against moves to split from longstanding structures to play in a largely closed competition rather than Europe's existing UEFA-run Champions League.

MONTREUX, Switzerland -- Players at the 12 clubs setting up their own Super League could be banned from the European Championship and next year's World Cup, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said Monday.
Ceferin showed his sense of anger and betrayal by the leaders of some wealthy European clubs as he spoke of "snakes," and wished UEFA could ban Super League clubs and players "as soon as possible" from all of its competitions.
Whether UEFA's lawyers will advise that -- with the Champions League and Europa League semifinals starting next week, and Euro 2020 kicking off in June -- is unclear.

'My opinion didn't change' - Liverpool boss Klopp reiterates opposition to Super League plans

"My feelings didn't change. My opinion didn't change," Klopp told
Sky Sports before his side faced Leeds on Monday. "I heard for the first time about it yesterday. I was trying to prepare for a difficult game.
"We got some information, not a lot. Most of the things in the newspapers. It's a tough one. People are not happy with it, I can understand it. I can't say a lot more because we were not involved in the process - not the players, not me - we didn't know about it. We will have to wait how it develops."
He added:  "I'm 53. Since I've been in professional football, the Champions League has been there. My aim was always to coach a team there. I have no issues with the Champions League.

The winners and losers from the Super League plan for European football

Who benefits from the Super League?
Club owners: The few people driving the 20-team competition plan hope to see the value of team equity and shares soar. Share prices in Juventus and Manchester United rose more than 10% Monday.
Most owners are already billionaires – investors and hedge funds from the United States, an oligarch from Russia, construction and retail magnates from Spain and China, royalty from Abu Dhabi, a tax-exiled currency trader from England.
The 12 rebel clubs already have the highest revenues in world football, earning hundreds of millions of dollars from playing in domestic leagues and selling sponsorships globally.
Most top up income with around €100 million ($167 million) each season from UEFA in Champions League prizemoney.

Tottenham's Mourinho gamble has not paid off and once again Spurs find themselves at a crossroads with their next managerial appointment.
Installing Mourinho as boss, even with his astounding list of achievements, appeared a slightly bemusing decision considering the complete contrast between his pragmatic style and the more high-intensity football played by predecessor Mauricio Pochettino.
There were plenty of signs of promise, not least the 6-1 hammering of Mourinho's former employers Manchester United at Old Trafford in the infancy of a Premier League campaign that offered early promise of a title tilt.
But a run to the EFL Cup final has not done enough to assuage Spurs' hierarchy, who have decided to pull the trigger after a slump in form has left Tottenham seventh in the table, out of the Europa League and in serious jeopardy of missing out on Champions League football again.

'Football has to change': Euro Super League chief Perez

Madrid (AFP) – Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said on Tuesday that plans by 12 clubs including the Spanish giants to form a European Super League (ESL) were made to save football.
On Monday, six Premier League teams — Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur — joined forces with Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan to launch the planned competition.
They have decided to break away from the UEFA-sanctioned Champions League and start their new competition “as soon as possible”, with plans for three more founding members to join and for five other clubs to be invited annually.

LONDON, April 19 — Jose Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham today just six days before they play Manchester City in the League Cup final as the Portuguese boss paid the price for a turbulent campaign.
Mourinho, 58, was dismissed after only 17 months in charge, even though he could have led the club to their first silverware since 2008.
Tottenham have been struggling in their bid to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four finish in the Premier League.

'Madrid will not be kicked out of Champions League': ESL chief Perez

Madrid (AFP) – Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said on Tuesday that no club will be thrown out of the Champions League for joining a proposed European Super League (ESL).
On Monday, six Premier League teams — Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur — joined forces with Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan to launch the planned competition.

'Hopefully it doesn't happen' - Liverpool captain Milner against Super League

Leeds (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Liverpool midfielder James Milner said on Monday he hopes a European Super League (ESL) does not happen despite his club being one of 12 teams to sign up to a breakaway.
The English champions have teamed up with Premier League rivals Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal for the proposed 20-team competition.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan are the other founder members of the plan.
However, speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw away to Leeds in the Premier League, Milner joined governments, governing bodies, fans and other players to criticise the proposals.

UEFA announces new formats for Europe battles
April 20, 2021
PARIS – The Champions League will expand from 32 teams to 36 starting from 2024/2025 season, as the European football governing body UEFA released several revolutions across its club competitions on Monday, hours after 12 elite clubs created the European Super League.
According to the UEFA, the reforms come after extensive consultation across the football family and received unanimous backing from the ECA Board and the UEFA Club Competitions Committee last Friday, reported Xinhua news agency.

Under the new format, the Champions League will have 36 participating teams, rather than the current 32. One of the additional places will go to the club ranked third in the championship of the association in the fifth position in the UEFA national association ranking. Another will be awarded to a domestic champion by extending from four to five the number of clubs qualifying via the so-called “Champions Path”.

The United Kingdom's prime minister, Boris Johnson, and Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, have added their voices to condemnation of a plan to launch a $6-billion breakaway soccer super league.
The elite league, which would be backed financially by United States investment bank JP Morgan, would be populated by some of the largest and richest soccer clubs in Europe.
Its proposed establishment, which was announced on Sunday, represents a seismic shift in European soccer; the effects of which are certain to be felt across existing cross-border tournaments, including the Champions League and the Europa League, as well as domestic competitions.

Villarreal Boss Wants More Goals from Chukwueze

Card image cap

Villarreal CF Manager, Unai Emery, has asked Samuel Chukwueze to score more goals after the Super Eagles winger fired a brace against UD Levante in the Spanish topflight.
On Sunday night, Chukwueze scored a brace to help Villarreal defeated hosts Levante 5-1 in a La Liga clash.
The 21-year-old player has now scored three goals in 25 league games this season.
He has only matched the tally he achieved last season.
The former Nigerian Golden Eaglet netted five times in his debut La Liga season.
“He’s a very young player who has to find consistency,” Emery told the Villarreal website yesterday.

Manchester City, Chelsea, and Real Madrid could be disqualified from this season's Champions League later this week due to their involvement in the newly announced European Super League, UEFA executive committee member Jesper Moller said.
"(Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Chelsea) are going out, and I expect that to happen on Friday," Moller told Danish broadcaster DR Sport on Monday, according to CBS Sports' Mike Goodman. "And then you have to see how to finish the Champions League.
"There must be one extraordinary executive committee meeting on Friday," he added.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin also slammed the proposed European Super League on Monday, saying that players who compete in the tournament risk being banned from continental and international competitions.

Furious UEFA warns clubs: Join European Super League and we will ban you and your players
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has warned the football body is working to ban breakaway European Super League clubs and their players from its competitions “as soon as possible” and urged domestic leagues to follow suit.
Twelve clubs, including the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’, are part of plans which would fundamentally alter the shape of European football.
Visibly angry
This was supposed to be the day where the spotlight was on UEFA’s plans to revamp its competitions from 2024, but instead Ceferin faced questions last night about the impact of a different event entirely, one which he described as “a spit in the face” of football lovers.
