Studying plankton with a digital holographic camera will help ecology

Studying plankton with a digital holographic camera will help ecology
Scientists from the Laboratory of Radiophysical and Optical Methods for Studying the Environment (TSU Faculty of Radiophysics) have found a way to determine the pollution of water bodies by studying plankton. The main tool is a digital holographic camera, which, placed in the water, can determine the size and shape of plankton and other particles, their speed, the number of individuals, and other parameters. Conclusions about the state of the reservoir and its biological diversity can be drawn from the data obtained.
– To record a hologram, you need to pass a laser beam through the volume of the medium and register it on a charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera. This will be the axial hologram of this volume of the medium, – explained Viktor Dyomin, TSU First Vice-Rector, head of the laboratory. – It differs from ordinary photography in that we can completely restore information about t ....

Most solar power is produced by converting sunlight into electricity through the use of thin films made of semiconductor materials that absorb particles of light, called photons. These absorbed photons knock electrons loose from atoms in the thin film, and the free electrons are then channeled into an electrical current.
However, even the most popular semiconductor materials, such as crystalline silicon, have limits on how much electrical current they can produce-because the electrons don’t stay free for very long before they recombine with atoms in the film. The materials also need to be highly stable to withstand the heat, humidity, and other ....

U scientists plumb depths of world's tallest geyser

U scientists plumb depths of world’s tallest geyser
When Steamboat Geyser, the world’s tallest, started erupting again in 2018 in Yellowstone National Park after decades of relative silence, it raised a few tantalizing scientific questions. Why is it so tall? Why is it erupting again now? And what can we learn about it before it goes quiet again?
The University of Utah has been studying the geology and seismology of Yellowstone and its unique features for decades, so U scientists were ready to jump at the opportunity to get an unprecedented look at the workings of Steamboat Geyser. Their findings provide a picture of the depth of the geyser as well as a redefinition of a long-assumed relationship between the geyser and a nearby spring. The findings are published in the Journal of Geophysical Research. ....

15 MARCH 2021
Russian scientists on Saturday launched one of the world s biggest underwater space telescopes to peer deep into the Universe from the pristine waters of Lake Baikal.
The deep underwater telescope, which has been under construction since 2015, is designed to observe neutrinos, the smallest particles currently known.

Dubbed Baikal-GVD, the telescope was submerged to a depth of 750-1,300 meters (2,500-4,300 feet), around four kilometers from the lake s shore.
