Scientists find clues to a process occurring throughout universe that affects fusion energy
New research reveals a surprising insight into the physics behind magnetic reconnection, a process occurring through the universe that converts magnetic to kinetic energy. The findings, by researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) together with other physicists, could lead to a greater ability to predict space weather – fast particles from the sun that can disrupt communications satellites and electrical networks.
Improved understanding could also lead to more efficient generation of the fusion energy that powers the sun and stars, which researchers are seeking to reproduce on Earth as a safe, clean, and abundant source of energy for generating electricity. ....

Research at heart of new University of Southern Queensland and Granite Belt partnership
Research opportunities for both scientists and students at the University of Southern Queensland have been given a boost with a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and Granite Belt Water Limited (GBW).
Engineering, agriculture, horticulture, hydrology and environment are just some of the research project focus areas that stand to benefit from the new partnership.
GBW is a community-owned entity with oversight of the Granite Belt Irrigation Project that will deliver a 12,074 megalitre dam at Emu Swamp as well as 126km of pipeline throughout the Granite Belt. ....

Remote control for quantum emitters

Remote control for quantum emitters
Quantum technologies are enabled by precise control of the state and interactions of individual quantum objects. Innsbruck physicists have now proposed a way to remotely control the state of individual quantum emitters. The underlying idea, developed by a research group led by Oriol Romero-Isart, is based on chirped light pulses.
In order to exploit the properties of quantum physics technologically, quantum objects and their interaction must be precisely controlled. In many cases, this is done using light. Researchers at the University of Innsbruck and the Institute of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences have now developed a method to individually address quantum emitters using tailored light pulses. “Not only is it important to individually control and read the state of the emitters,” says Oriol Romero-Isart, “but also to do so while leaving the system as undisturbed as ....
