The official opening was delayed last year due to COVID-19. WEIRTON A lot of things had to be put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of them was the official opening of the new location of the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau and Summit Art Gallery, at 3539 Main St. in Weirton. The grand debut is on hold no more, as Executive Director Terri Phillips cut the ribbon, Wednesday night, surrounded by members of the CVB board and local officials, including commissioners from Hancock and Brooke counties. ....

(AP) West Virginia will receive nearly $1.4 billion from the federal government to offset economic setbacks from the coronavirus pandemic, but likely not all at once. An additional $516 million is earmarked for every county and some larger cities. The $350 billion national program launched Monday is part of President Joe Biden’s larger $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that became law in March. Because West Virginia’s current unemployment rate is not significantly higher than its pre-pandemic level, the state is eligible to receive just half of its allotment immediately, with the rest being provided one year later. May 11, 2021 Contributed MEETING HIGHLIGHTS The April meeting of the Weirton Woman’s Club included Molly Mossor, left, presenting the program on “Women Who Changed History.” WEIRTON The Weirton Woman’s Club, a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, met on April 5 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. The executive board met prior to the general meeting. President Jeanne Amidon presided, welcoming members and introducing new member Roxanne Matysiak. Carla Colson gave the inspiration, reading “Ten Reasons to Forgive Someone.” Molly Mossor, committee chairman of the GFWC Women’s History and Resource Center, presented the program, her focus “Women Who Changed the World.” Among them were crusaders, abolitionists, scientists, doctors and authors. Mossor also discussed Jane Addams, child labor and reform, and Alice Lakey, campaigner to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act, both of whom were women’s club members. She then introduced state ....

Tourism has been a major focus for the administration of Gov. Jim Justice. New advertising campaigns have been created, the state’s Tourism Department has been raised to a Cabinet level and various incentives have been suggested as a way to attract visitors to the Mountain State. The federal government, or at least some of our delegation to the federal government, has found ways to make contributions to this particular cause as well, allocating funds to various wildlife preserves and programs.
