TOKYO: Toyota Motor Corp has acquired the self-driving division of American ride-hailing company Lyft for US$500 million, in a move that underlines the Japanese automaker’s ambitions in that technology.
The acquisition, announced Tuesday (Apr 27), was carried out by Woven Planet Holdings, a Toyota subsidiary that began business in January and focuses on innovations and investment in projects such as “smart cities , robotics and automated driving.

The Woven Planet project will bring together engineers and researchers in mobility services, as well as the software and sensor assets and automated driving systems to further develop the technology, according to Toyota.

Net income fell 9.3% to 11.7 billion rupees ($157 million) in the three months ended March 31, the unit of Japanâs Suzuki Motor Corp. said in a statement Tuesday. Thatâs less than the average analyst estimate of 17 billion rupees, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Jagdish Khattar, former managing director of Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL), passed away on Monday due to a cardiac arrest. He was 78 years old.
Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava confirmed Khattar s death to CNBC-TV18 and said it is a deep personal loss.
“This is a deep personal loss and has come as a big shock. We had worked together for many years. He is someone who had done a lot of good for Maruti,” Bhargava told the publication.
