The city s historic winter that s 108.6 inches has finally melted. the last of it was from a giant pile that once stood more than two stories tall. it has now melted into a puddle with a wee bit of trash left behind. talk about christmas in july, it is a busy day for shoppers. two of the world s biggest retailers are in a bit of a war offering massive discounts on thousands of items. it s amazon s prime day, something the company has been promoting for weeks now as an event bigger than black friday. but not to be outdone, walmart announced monday it was having its own sale. are the deals all they have cracked up to be? joining me now is cnbc reporter courtney reagan. amazon prime day is what started this whole war here but that is only open to prime members. they pay almost $100 for the service. a short time ago nbc news reported several tweets by people disappointed in the deals. they re calling it a garage sale. how do you see it? ....

Rick? the snow has been falling for a couple hours, starting to stick to the road. there are winter weather advisories through this region through tonight because of this mix of snow, and later rain and sleet and freezing rain are expected to continue for several hours. they believe about 3 to 5 inches of snow should fall here in the new york area but also down in new jersey and pennsylvania where things have been dicey. we re also told that it started snowing down in baltimore early this morning. that snow transitioning into rain in the baltimore-d.c. area, but the advisories remain in effect because of the limited visibility, the hazardous travel conditions with slippery roads. in several states including pennsylvania new jersey, new york and massachusetts even boston could see a couple more inches from this particular storm system adding to the record 108.6 inches that have already blanketed beantown this year. shannon, in case you re having difficulty doing the math or ....

That was before winter even began. it s too much. it s just really a lot of snow here and we re closed in here. it s not an open area. can just fling the snow area. reporter: an army of front loaders work around the clock. three days later, temperatures were in the mid 60s. it wasn t just northern cities to face winter s wrath. the deep south suffered as well from dallas to nashville to lexington. the south was in the deep freeze. earlier this month, south of louisville, kentucky, i-65 turned into a block of ice. causing trucks to jackknife and backing up traffic for miles. motorists were stranded in their cars for up to 20 hours. we have now been sitting in this same spot for over four hours. reporter: but the big winter this season is clearly boston. people shovelled through the snowiest season on record with 108.6 inches of snow so far. february was their snowiest month on record. and to add to the misery, it didn t get above freezing for 15 straight days that month. they ar ....
