states. here cbs's carter evans. >> reporter: as the unrelenting heat wave enters its 40th consecutive day, the temperature is expected to reach a record-setting 119 in palm springs, where hiking trails are closed, but road crews are still on the job. the pavement they are working on is 142 degrees. jose sanchez figures he will need to drink at least 2 gallons of water to stay hydrated. >> for the first four hours, you are okay, but then the last four hours, you've got to take a lot of breaks. >> reporter: no kids on the playground today and you can understand why. the temperature here on the slide is 171 degrees. further north in death valley, a 71-year-old hiker died after collapsing during his visit in the 121-degree heat. meanwhile, in phoenix, temperatures are staying in the triple-digit heat, flirting with a new daily record. and heat related e.r. visits are on the rise in the southwest, up 134% from last week.

>> all right, let's talk about weather so no one gets upset with me. 80 million people impacted with these heat alerts. this is something we deal with for the extended period so well through your weekend and into early next week. let's start in the south where the humidity is a big deal. new orleans heads to 109 for the feels-like temperature today. in dallas, 110 degrees. we look ahead to tomorrow, even your saturday, more of the same. there's not much change. 90s for actual temperature across much of this area, triple digits for the feels-like temperature and takes us into early next week and we'll keep those temperatures going. keep the acs cranked up. meanwhile southwest it is brutal out there. triple digit temperatures. this has been going for multiple weeks at this point. and you have places like palm springs going to hit 121 degrees on saturday and sunday. las vegas heads to 117 on sunday, 117 for phoenix saturday and sunday, and the list just goes on the next couple of days.

like this, very summer-like in those same areas through the extended period, through saturday, sunday and into early next week. now we move to the southwest where these temperatures are just ridiculous, phoenix heads friday 116 this afternoon, saturday even warmer, 117 and it stays that way for sunday afternoon as well. tucson, 110 about for saturday and sunday plans. palm springs will get to 121 on saturday and sunday, and las vegas will head to 117. these temperatures unfortunately, lindsey, they don't get any better. we could see death valley hit top five for a global record if it does make it to 130 degrees by sunday. so in phoenix, they are shutting down some of the hiking trails during the hottest part of the day. in greece, they're shutting down the acropolis, southern europe is also sweltering under a fierce heat wave, and officials there are trying to keep people cool. the european heat wave is named after the mythical three headed monster that guards the underworld. weather alerts are in place in
