What the Kansas City Chiefs will do at receiver if Sammy Watkins walks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs thought wide receiver Sammy Watkins was so vital in 2018 they signed him as a free agent despite the presence of pass-catching stars Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. They thought he was so important to keep around last year that when facing a tight salary-cap situation they fought to keep him on a reduced contract.
The Chiefs, for the first time since making Patrick Mahomes their starting quarterback in 2018, may soon find out what life is like without Watkins. He's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and though the Chiefs would take him back at their price, there's no guarantee that will happen.

How the Denver Broncos can win their offseason

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- When new Denver Broncos general manager George Paton pulls into his parking space each day, it's for a team that has missed the playoffs in each of the past five seasons.
But the Broncos have enough salary cap room to dive into free agency -- currently north of $40 million with room to make more. They also have the No. 9 pick in the 2021 NFL draft and four picks among the first 109 with nine selections overall.
In short, they can get some things done -- even in a year when the salary cap has gone down in the wake of the pandemic. The cap is expected to be somewhere between $185 million and $189 million per team.

Chiefs' defense shares blame for biggest pass-rush disparity in Super Bowl history

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In the first quarter of Super Bowl LV, defensive end Frank Clark appeared to be on his way to another big postseason game for the Kansas City Chiefs.
First, Clark stayed home on an end around, avoided an attempted block and tackled receiver Scotty Miller of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a loss. Two plays later, he sacked Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.
After that, though, Clark -- like the rest of the Chiefs defense -- produced little, with two assisted tackles.
"Some of the things that are my strengths I wasn't able to showcase because they got up on us and it's a different kind of ballgame when you're playing from behind," Clark said after the game. "I was defending the run a lot."

Chiefs' Mecole Hardman more than just fast? K.C.'s actions this offseason may tell the tale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman has heard the talk after two NFL seasons: The only thing he has going for him is his 4.33 speed. He made it clear in the week leading up to Super Bowl LV that he's bothered by the suggestions he's something less than a complete receiver.
"I can really run routes," Hardman said a few days before the Chiefs lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "That kind of makes me mad when people say, 'Oh, he's just a deep ball threat.' I literally can run routes very well. People don't really see it because a lot of my routes are down the field. You've got Travis [Kelce] and Sammy [Watkins] and Tyreek [Hill] for all that other stuff. They can do everything across the board. I can really run routes really [well]. I get out of my breaks very well.

Broncos' secondary needs serious help before 2021 NFL season

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- While Drew Lock's future at quarterback and Von Miller's future at linebacker are already discussion in full swirl early in this Denver Broncos' offseason, a very real down-to-down football problem is staring the team in the face as well.
The Broncos are wafer-thin at cornerback and face the possibility of remaking an entire secondary if some big checks don't get written.
"Those are things [general manager] George [Paton] will have to look at," said Broncos president of football operations John Elway.
Cornerback A.J. Bouye, who missed the final four games of this season and will miss the first two games of 2021 due to a violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, faces an uncertain future and could potentially be released. Cornerback Bryce Callahan, who was playing some of the best football in his career before he injured his foot this season, has now missed 22 games over the past two seasons with injuries.

Kliff Kingsbury gave Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Browns' Baker Mayfield a chance

It may be an AFC divisional game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns to most, but Sunday's game (3:05 p.m. ET, CBS) is unofficially the Kliff Kingsbury Bowl.
Kingsbury, now head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, coached both starting quarterbacks -- Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes and Cleveland's Baker Mayfield -- in consecutive seasons as head coach at Texas Tech.
When the two former Red Raiders square off for a chance to play in the AFC Championship Game, Kingsbury will sit back and relish the moment.
"It's kind of like being a big brother, I guess," Kingsbury said. "I just sit back as a fan now and try to enjoy the success those guys are having. Just to be around those guys, have a small part in anything that they've been able to become as a quarterback, I take a lot of pride in that and those guys know that."

Best fit for Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy? A look at the five teams with which he's interviewed

He'd rank his latest candidate, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, with any of them.
"I have not seen many guys that are as great a leader as he is of men," Reid said this week. "In this business, that's huge. You're never going to have to worry about Eric Bieniemy -- never -- on the field, off the field. He's going to be honest with you and straightforward, and then he knows the offense."
That would be a Chiefs offense that has ranked first in the NFL in two of the past three years.
This week, while the Chiefs enjoyed a first-round playoff bye, Bieniemy interviewed with five of the six teams needing a head coach: the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets.
