Left guard Joe Thuney giving boost to Chiefs' offensive line

By MATT DERRICKJuly 28, 2021 GMT
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs left guard Joe Thuney walked off the field following Kansas City’s first full squad practice of training camp drenched with perspiration as the heat index registered 95 degrees by 11 a.m.
“I feel it. I can’t stop dripping,” said Thuney, the free-agent transplant who relocated from New England during the offseason. “But it’s great. I didn’t realize Missouri got this hot.”
It’s not just the temperature that’s rising in training camp, but the expectations as well. The club lured Thuney from the Patriots with a free-agent contract valued at $80 million over five seasons in an effort to reinforce a beleaguered offensive line decimated by injuries a year ago.

Portland police adopt some recommendations by racial equity committee, still far from others

Updated July 27
Portland police adopt some recommendations by racial equity committee, still far from others
Chief Frank Clark appears before a City Council workshop to outline how the department is progressing on racial justice issues highlighted by the specially formed city group.
The Portland Police Department is adopting more rigorous anti-bias training, relying more on non-police specialists to help on mental health-related calls, and has begun screening new police applicants for bias-related conduct and concerns.
Those were some of the changes Chief Frank Clark outlined when he appeared before a City Council workshop Tuesday night to present the department’s progress and itemized responses to the list of recommendations made this spring by the city’s racial equity steering committee. The group was convened after the murder of George Floyd and the nationwide uprisings that called for racial justice and greater police accountability and oversight.

3 Teams That Could Trade For Chandler Jones

Chandler Jones is on the market, baby!
The Arizona Cardinals’ unwillingness to extend Jones has been widely reported and is unfortunately unsurprising—they often make odd decisions as a franchise. Jones has been as, if not more successful than pretty much any EDGE rusher over the last five seasons, and is coming off of only his first significant injury in his career. Don’t get it twisted: this is a legit star on the market.
But, he is also a 31-year-old with only one year left on his deal. That does make things tricky, as the acquiring team wouldn’t just have to pay the Cardinals trade compensation for Jones, they’d have to weigh the price of acquiring Jones against the contract they may have to sign him to. That’s a tricky bargain to make, but a few teams in competing windows make sense for Jones on a one-year rental with the potential to sign him for another few years and contend perennially.

Chiefs' Andy Reid on Frank Clark: he'll be here, and we'll go forward

In early July,
Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark was charged with felony possession of an assault weapon stemming from his March arrest,
Friday marked the first media availability for Andy Reid since the charge — and the Chiefs head coach said he had remained in touch with Clark since offseason activities had ended.
“I obviously stay in communication with all our players during the break the best I possibly can,” said Reid. “I have had a chance to talk to Frank — I’m not going to get into that. There’s nothing that has taken place up to this point. Frank will be here, and we’ll go forward with that. Obviously, we keep tabs on it and his people will keep tabs on their side of it and we move forward.”

Chiefs' Andy Reid Says Frank Clark Will Attend Camp Despite Arrest: 'We Move Forward'

Christian Petersen/Getty Images
The Kansas City Chiefs are expecting Frank Clark at the start of training camp next Wednesday, weeks after he was charged with felony possession of an assault weapon.
"Frank will be here, and we'll go forward," head coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday. "We move forward."
TMZ Sports reported in June that Clark had been arrested in Los Angeles. Officers pulled him over for a traffic stop and said they saw an Uzi inside an open duffle bag in his vehicle. He told authorities the gun belonged to a member of his security personnel.
Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell subsequently reported that Clark was also arrested by California Highway Patrol in March. Police pulled him over because his car lacked a front license plate, and they said they found a loaded rifle and handgun in the backseat.

Chiefs start reporting for camp with roster 90% vaccinated

Chiefs start reporting for camp with roster 90% vaccinated
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and several of his Kansas City Chiefs teammates reported for training camp Friday, with 90% of the team’s roster having received the COVID-19 vaccine.
“There’s six teams that are over 90%, so we’re glad to be in that area there,” coach Andy Reid said. “We’re one of the teams where the players have really challenged themselves to get things done and take care of business.”
The Chiefs are holding training camp on the campus of Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, and Reid says fans will notice new procedures when attending practices this summer. Players will not be signing autographs and other measures are being taken to increase health safety for players and other club employees. Reid reported that 100% of his staff has received a vaccine.

Seattle Seahawks Training Camp Preview: Defensive Ends - Sports Illustrated Seattle Seahawks News, Analysis and More

Jul 23, 2021
Following a long offseason - okay, compared to the nightmare that was 2020, the past several months have been a breeze - the Seahawks will officially usher in the 2021 season by reporting to training camp on July 27.
Continuing our camp preview series, here's a close look at the state of the defensive end position, including the depth chart, a key question that must be answered, and a bold prediction for the upcoming season.
2020 In Review
Out of the gate, the Seahawks lacked much of a punch rushing the passer off the edge. Veteran Benson Mayowa was the only defensive end with multiple sacks in the first seven games of the season, leaving safety Jamal Adams as the team leader despite missing four games with groin injury. But after getting just one hit on Kyler Murray in a Week 7 loss to the Cardinals, the team acquired Carlos Dunlap from the Bengals and his presence immediately transformed one of the NFL's most anemic pass rushes into a formidable one. After he made his debut, Seattle finished with more sacks than any other team in the league over the final nine regular season games, which played a vital role in the defense's remarkable second half revival.

Review of June 1 protest describes restraint by Portland police amid chaos

Review of June 2020 protest describes restraint by Portland police officers amid chaos
Last year's June 1 protest of George Floyd's killing was largely peaceful, but clashes after nightfall posed an unprecedented challenge for police, who could have been better prepared, a report concludes.

An outside review of the Portland police response to a June 1, 2020, demonstration and confrontation in the wake of George Floyd’s murder found that officers largely exercised restraint during a chaotic, unprecedented event.
It also highlighted how the vast majority of roughly 500 to 1,000 demonstrators who filled the streets outside the Portland police station exercised their First Amendment rights peacefully and without conflict, even working to stop or de-escalate tension and call out bad actors who threw bottles and bricks as the night wore on.

Independent review of June 2020 protest finds Portland police response 'appropriate'
The report concluded that in many cases, officers "showed restraint" as events from the largely peaceful protest turned more hectic

PORTLAND, Maine — The outside firm the city hired to investigate to Portland Police Department's response to a Black Lives Matter protest in June 2020 has completed its report, and concluded the response was "appropriate," and even "restrained."
Clifton Larson Allen LLP was hired by the city in February 2021 to investigate the June 1-2 protest that was held in the wake of George Floyd’s death. The protest ended in 33 arrests and damage to businesses in downtown Portland. The Cumberland County District Attorney later said the charges against the people arrested would not be pursued, citing insufficient evidence.

Kansas City Chiefs re-sign DE Alex Okafor to 1-year deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Veteran defensive end Alex Okafor has signed a one-year deal to return to the Kansas City Chiefs, just days before the first players begin reporting for training camp.
The Chiefs did not disclose financial terms in announcing the deal Tuesday.
The 30-year-old Okafor has 30 sacks and 183 tackles in eight NFL seasons, including the past two with the Chiefs. He joined the club as a free agent from New Orleans in March 2019, signing a three-year, $18 million contract.
Okafor made an immediate impact in helping rebuild the Kansas City defense, recording five sacks and 21 combined tackles in 10 games. A torn pectoral muscle in Week 15 forced him to finish the season on injured reserve. He missed playing in the team’s victory over San Francisco in Super Bowl LIV.

Analyzing Denver Broncos' Cash Spending Compared to NFL Rivals - Sports Illustrated Mile High Huddle: Denver Broncos News, Analysis and More

Jul 16, 2021
When we look at the Denver Broncos' spending patterns, we often talk about cap space and how much room the team has to add other players, but we don't talk as much about cash spending.
Cap space and cash spending are two different elements. The former is about how much space a team has to fit new contracts under the salary cap, while the latter refers to the actual
cash spent.
As an example, teams often use signing bonuses in contracts and that money is paid out over the course of the first year of the contract. For cap purposes, it is pro-rated over the duration of the contract, but for cash purposes, it is not — the money in question is paid in the first year.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A California judge Wednesday moved Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark's gun case to October.
Clark is facing charges in two gun possession cases in Los Angeles.
Wednesday's case stems from the
March 2021 incident during which police found a gun in Clark's vehicle.
