Peters, Stabenow Applaud $4.5 Million Federal Funding to Help Advance MTU Automated Vehicle Research
Michigan's U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow yesterday (March 10) welcomed $4,498,650 in federal funding awarded to Michigan Tech for self-driving vehicle research and development. The funding – awarded through the Department of Energy – will support ongoing projects to enhance connected and automated vehicle technologies that improve driver safety by eliminating risk found in human error.
Led by the University and in partnership with General Motors (GM), the American Center of Mobility and Stellantis, this research aims to identify additional opportunities for fuel savings and EV range optimization by creating more intelligently operating vehicles.

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) and Michigan Tech announce a Memorandum of Understanding that formalizes a  partnership to explore and develop collaborative opportunities, deepen engagement in areas of mutual expertise, and promote educational opportunities and career exploration for students enrolled in the TCAPS SCI-MA-TECH Program.
The agreement will also provide $1,000  renewable for scholarships to SCI-MA-TECH students who enroll at MTU after graduation.
“We are pleased to be partnering with a top-rated university that specializes in engineering and other in-demand STEM fields,” said John VanWagoner, superintendent of TCAPS. “The opportunities for our students to receive lectures and other curricular extensions from Michigan Tech professors, to receive support for robotics programs, and to have the opportunity for a  renewable annual scholarship are incredible benefits for our SCI-MA-TECH students. We are  proud to be embarking on this collaboration with Michigan Tech and look forward to what we  can build together.”

Once again the MTU Flex Task Force is looking for volunteers to act as "runners" during baseline COVID-19 testing as students return to campus from Spring Break. Michigan Tech's Spring Break begins with the end of classes today (March 5). Classes will resume on Monday, March 15.
Brian Cadwell, director and chief of the Department of Public Safety and Police Services, said high volume baseline testing will begin on Friday, March 19 and go through Tuesday, March 23. The testing will take place in the Wood Gym of the Student Development Complex (SDC).
Cadwell said COVID-19 testing requires two people ... a swabber and a runner. "The swabber applies the nasal swab to obtain a specimen. The runner stands nearby and holds a plastic bag in which the sample is placed. The runner then seals the plastic bag and places it in a cooler," Cadwell said

When a couple of biologists began their journey to share everything they knew about fruit flies, they didn’t plan on publishing a multivolume encyclopedia. But as Annelise Doll (Van Pelt and Opie Library) explains in her Unscripted guest blog, when the pages piled up, the team needed a place to publish that provided easy access.
By publishing books with open access on Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech, authors retain their copyright and control the subsequent use of the work through a Creative Commons license.
Under the license, readers may copy and share the work without changes in a noncommercial context as long as proper attribution is included. Works like The Encyclopedia of North American Drosophilids and “Printing 3D Models for Chemistry” that are published open-access (OA) are often considered open educational resources (OERs). These openly available, online instructional or reference materials can be used as alternatives to expensive course materials or as supplemental content. As the home of Michigan Tech’s digital repository, the Van Pelt and Opie Library promotes and assists with OA and OER projects.

Husky Bites Tonight: Sniffing Volcanoes From Space
by College of Engineering
What are you doing for supper tonight? How about grabbing a bite with Simon Carn (GMES) and co-host Bill Rose (GMES). Join College of Engineering Dean Janet Callahan at 6 p.m. tonight (Feb. 15) for Husky Bites, a free 20-minute Interactive Zoom Webinar from the College of Engineering. There'll be time after for Q&A. Tonight's topic is "Sniffing Volcanoes from Space."
Carn studies carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide emissions from volcanoes using remote sensing via satellite. This volcanic emissions information pulls together opportunities to improve monitoring of natural hazards, human health risks and climate processes—one volcanic breath at a time.

COVID has taken so many things from so many people, most notably loved ones and precious time with people we wish we could see again. It’s taken graduation ceremonies and celebrations. It’s taken lunch dates and anniversary dates. It’s taken in-person classes and at-home comfort. It’s taken sanctuary and peace of mind from students, teachers, parents and community members.
Incoming freshmen in college choose between taking classes in person and risking infection or taking classes online and risking isolation. This balance between online and in person is something that one group at Michigan Technological University has been working hard to combat.

Every year on the third Monday of January, we celebrate the life, work, and sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is widely known that Dr. King fought for a day when America would be a country of equals—when we would be judged by our merits, no matter the color of our skin, the religion we profess, or the place we were born.
The power of Dr. King’s words and the beauty of his dream are often the focus on this day. The phrase “I have a dream” is recognized by millions of Americans. Because Dr. King was one of the great orators of the 20th century, there is a tendency to focus on his inspirational quotes and powerful messages. But if we are truly to honor his legacy, particularly in these tumultuous times, we must go further. We are called to act. We must live the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Sustainability Film Series and facilitated discussion will begin its 11th year with the showing of "True Cost," a film about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world.
The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. This 2015 documentary film investigates who really pays the price for our clothing? The discussion facilitator will be  Soonkwan Hong (CoB), associate professor of marketing.
“This seemed like an appropriate film for January, after the consumption spree of the holidays!” explained Joan Chadde, film series coordinator, and director of the Michigan Tech Center for Science & Environmental Outreach.
