A Militarisation of the Southeast


A recent shoot-on-sight order against persons considered enemies of state in the Southeast by President Muhammadu Buhari, is worrisome. Amby Uneze writes
The recent shoot-on-sight order by President Muhammadu Buhari cannot be the solution to the insecurity in the Southeast today. Besides, importing soldiers and police personnel from the Northern part of the country to the Southeast with the charge to shoot-on-sight is more of a military culture. The essence of democratic rule is the total involvement of the people in the governance of their affairs and not government by force or kill-on-sight.
Before the current madness of attacking police and correctional facilities by the so-called unknown gunmen in Imo State, the people of the state had known peace all the while. The state and its people were regarded as one of the most peaceful states, where visitors and people from other warring zones found peace. ....

AFENIFERE, an apex Yoruba association has described the shoot-on-sight order given to soldiers in the South East by President Muhammadu Buhari as a move that would further threaten the unity and ruptured peace in the country.
The order which was given to the soldiers who are predominantly Northerners without first exploring the option of dialogue, the association maintained, had further fuelled the suspicion that President Buhari did not consider the life of another ethnic group sacred but that of Fulani, his kinsmen.

Ohanaeze flays shoot-on-sight order against Igbo youths


Says it’s call for another genocide
Ohanaeze Ndigbo has condemned the “shoot-on-sight” order by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Nigerian military against protesting Igbo youths, warning that such was call for another pogrom and genocide.
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation claimed that the alleged move would commence from Orlu, Imo State, in the next few days, adding that the secret plot was recently elaborated by a report ran by Sahara Reporters.
National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, stated yesterday that deployment of soldiers in Igboland recently confirmed the reports.

THE apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Monday warned the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his regime that the secret ‘shoot-on-sight order’ to soldiers on Igbo youths was a call for another “pogrom and genocide.”
Ohanaeze said it had uncovered the plan of the Nigerian military to massacre Igbo youths using Fulani-Hausa military commanders.
The Igbo socio-cultural group cautioned the Federal Government to refrain from the use of force in resolving the present national crises.
The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor, in a statement by Ohanaeze’s spokesman, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, said extrajudicial killings of innocent Igbo youths by security agencies, especially the military, had brought forth the new security situation in the South-East. ....
