Niger Delta leaders give FG three months to restructure Nigeria

Niger Delta leaders give FG three months to restructure Nigeria
The Punch
Published 26 June 2021
Niger Delta leaders have issued a three-month ultimatum to the Federal Government to restructure the country and convene a national dialogue comprising representatives of ethnic groups in order to chart a new course for the country.
This position was contained in a communique issued at the end of a South-South zonal conference held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Friday.
The conference which has critical stakeholders and representatives of ethnic nationalities in the region was organised by the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development in partnership with Agape Birthrights Development Initiative.

Restructuring and the 1963 Constitution

Funny how we hardly reach any cross-ethnic consensus in this country, but the campaign for a return to the 1963 Constitution — increasingly becoming the backbone of the “restructuring” agenda — seems popular in southern Nigeria and Benue state. The core argument is that we need to return to regionalism: every region should control its natural resources, take 50 percent derivation, run local councils and create state police “as provided for under the 1963 Constitution”. The 1999 Constitution, according to the #BringBack1963Constitution movement, is a glorified military document fit only to be used to wrap suya and sliced onions or roasted plantain and peanuts.

Why APC will continue to win elections—Oki

Share
Mr Fouad Oki, a chieftain of Lagos State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), who was factional chairman of the party in the state, speaks with BOLA BADMUS on the state of affairs of APC, the recently held party primaries to pick candidates for next month’s Local Government election holding in Lagos, among others.

No, it is not actually dead.

But there appears to be no opposition in Lagos, because politics now seems to revolve around the APC. People say you are the only opposition within the APC in Lagos, how do you react to this?
You (media) are part of those who continue to deceive APC leadership in Lagos State that they don’t have opposition. You continue to give the party a false sense of popularity. When you create a false sense of popularity and a false sense of there is no opposition, you are gradually pushing that person or that party into an obnoxious position that will help the kernel to burst and put it to death.

Nigeria's 'Delta Avengers' threaten oil installation attacks

Naija247news is an investigative news platform that tracks news on Nigerian Economy, Business, Politics, Financial and Africa and Global Economy.
YENAGOA, June 26 – A militant group in Nigeria’s oil-producing Delta region has threatened to resume attacks amid rising insecurity and disagreements over the share of oil wealth communities should get.
The group, called the Niger Delta Avengers, roughly halved Nigeria’s oil production in 2016, including an attack on an underwater pipeline that took it out for more than a year. It has since made a variety of threats but has not staged any attacks since 2017.
“The Nigerian government has continued to pay deaf ears to our demands and the rising challenges in the country,” the group said in a statement posted on its website and emailed to journalists.
