Protons don t like to stay close to one another for very long. But if you ve got the right number balanced neatly among enough neutrons, they just might build an atom that won t crumble apart in the blink of an eye.
 
Theorists had suggested 114 could be one such magic number of protons – but a recent experiment conducted at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Germany now makes that incredibly unlikely.
In 1998, Russian experimenters finally succeeded in building an element with 114 protons in its nucleus. It was later named flerovium after its birthplace, the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. ....

Alpha particles lurk at the surface of neutron-rich nuclei

Scientists from an international collaboration have found evidence of alpha particles at the surface of neutron-rich heavy nuclei, providing new insights into the structure of neutron stars, as well as the process of alpha decay.
Neutron stars are amongst the most mysterious objects in our universe. They contain extremely dense matter that is radically different from the ordinary matter surrounding us being composed almost entirely of neutrons rather than atoms. However, in the nucleus at the center of normal atoms, matter exists at similar densities.
Understanding the nature of matter at such extremes is important for our understanding of neutron stars, as well as the beginning, workings, and final fate of the universe, says Junki Tanaka, one of the leaders of the study. ....

The experiment was performed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP) in Osaka. The research team, lead by scientists from TU Darmstadt and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy-Ion Research, and from the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science, discuss the new findings in a contribution to the latest issue of the journal

The strong interaction binds neutrons and protons together to atomic nuclei. The knowledge of properties of nuclei and their theoretical description is basis for our understanding of nuclear matter and the development of the universe. Laboratory-based studies of reactions between atomic nuclei provide means to explore nuclear properties. These experiments allow to test and verify theories that describe properties of extended nuclear matter at different conditions, as present, for instance, in neutron stars in the universe.
