CAPE TOWN (8 November 2023) - World Resources Institute (WRI) has been selected to receive the 2023 GEO SDG Awards from the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the Earth Observations for Sustainable Development Goals Initiative (EO4SDG). WRI’s Energy Access Explorer (EAE) platform received the Civil Society Award, which recognizes the productivity, innovation and exemplary efforts in the use of Earth observations to support sustainable development.

In Kenya and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa where power outages are a regular occurrence, distributed renewable energy installations like those at Top Care are emerging as a resilient and increasingly attractive solution.  

Kenya experienced its longest nationwide power blackout on August 25,2023, lasting more than 24 hours. While the cause of the system disturbance remains a mystery, the impacts were clear — and severe.

Thanks to WRI’s Energy Access Explorer platform and partnerships, more than 30 rural health facilities in India and Kenya now receive consistent, affordable electricity through distributed renewable energy systems.
