'Dire need' to boost Bowen's economic prospects

Bowen business leaders have not held back in sharing their thoughts on a newly released town masterplan, labelling it a “feel good document” that fails to address a “dire need” to develop and diversify the local economy.
The Whitsunday Regional Council’s draft plan to “help shape Bowen’s potential” recently went out for community consultation, and Bowen Chamber of Commerce chairman Bruce Hedditch has been vocal about its shortcomings.
He claims it does not provide the roadmap for industrial promotion and economic development the town needs.
Mr Hedditch said empty shops and declining property values should be indicators “there is a dire need in Bowen for something to happen’.

Tour de Carmichael reaches Central Queensland mine

“It’s distressing to see the mine and see the change in the landscape,” Mr McAvoy said.
“We don’t know what damage the mine will do to our sacred Doongmabulla Springs.
“But that’s why I organised this event, to bring people to our land and raise awareness of the destruction Adani (Bravus) is doing to it.”

The tour had previously stopped at a number of significant sites to the Wangan and Jagalingou people, and camped at “Dalgayu Dina”, the site on Bravus’ pastoral lease where Mr McAvoy and others have built a corroboree ground and campsite.

Protesters blockade rail line constructions site at controversial coal mine owned by Bravus Adani

Work is continuing at the Carmichael coal mine and rail project after police removed protesters trying to blockade the site in central Queensland.
The protest by a group of 15 people is the second launched against mine project owned by Bravus, previous known as Adani Australia, in three days.
Bravus is building a 10 million tonne-a-year thermal coal mine in the Galilee Basin, which could eventually be expanded to six times that size.

The company is also building a rail line that will be opened to other companies if it gets the tick of approval.
