The Reading food waste truck MORE than 500 tonnes of food waste was collected in the first month of Reading Borough’s new bin service, it has been revealed. The impressive haul came from around 70,000 homes and totalled 554.2 tonnes – the same average weight as 92 elephants! Each household contributed 2.35 kilograms of food waste on average, the weight equivalent of around five footballs. The scheme is meeting its target of helping Reading Borough Council (RBC) to reach a recycling rate of 45 per cent. Councillor Adele Barnett-Ward, lead member for Neigbourhoods and Communities, said she is “delighted” that the scheme has successfully achieved a 45.8 per cent recycling rate. ....
Reading Council/Wokingham council Labour clash The council has clarified it will not fire and rehire any staff, after concern was raised by a Labour councillor at a budget meeting. Reading Borough Council (RBC) last week denied claims it will ‘fire and rehire’ staff as part of plans to save millions of pounds this year. Green councillor Rob White raised concerns at a meeting that the Labour-run council is planning to reduce its staff’s pay and conditions such as overtime and pay protection. RBC leader councillor Jason Brock responded: “No-one is going to be sacked over terms and conditions.” ....
The councillor was accused of language worthy of Handforth Parish Council An opposition councillor has been slammed and accused of “language worthy of Handforth Parish Council” for his criticism of the council’s spending plans on local projects. Speaking at Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) Policy committee on Monday (February 15), Green councillor Rob White raised concern about the council’s spending plans on local projects using Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding from developments. The committee approved the £1.5 million of spending on projects across the town including pedestrian crossings, repairing a cycle path and play area works, but Cllr White suggested the way the schemes have been prioritised “reinforces the impression this money is being used as a Labour councillor slush fund”. ....

Shortly before 1am yesterday (February 14), police were called to Managua Close in Caversham. A man, aged 24, was found with a stab wound to his chest and died at the scene. National media reports have identified the victim as Yannick Cupido. Police have been unable to officially confirm the victim s identity. Commenting on the Chronicle s Facebook page, one reader said: You don t expect this to happen on your doorstep. Another added: Sad to hear another death at the hands of knives thoughts with the victim and his family. ....
