Te Tai Tokerau is mourning a man who spent decades lifting others out of poverty, homelessness, addiction and imprisonment.

Residents have won a major battle against McCallum Bros, Auckland's biggest supplier of sand for concrete, with a resource consent application to take more sand off a beach north of the city rejected.

Tributes have been flowing for te reo revitaliser and key advocate for Pākehā allyship to Māori, Andrew Robb, who has died at the age of 66.

However, before this could go ahead members of the community started camping on the land to register their opposition to the proposed development. The occupation grew steadily, and it was not long before the Prime Minister buckled to the pressure by calling in consultants to advise on the situation, with the taxpayer to foot the bill. So far $150,000 has been spent on consultants, with the recommendation unlikely to have been anything else other than what price the Crown should pay to exit this mess, which will subsequently open the door for future scenarios like this.
