of the country, another in the east, both of them working as journalists, both fearing the taliban, both of them having received threats to the taliban, and neither of them able to travel to kabul, much less get on an evacuation flight. there have been promises from the united states and other coalition partners that in the future when the airport or borders are open properly, they ll hold the taliban to their promises to allow people to trafl freely. that s a promise the taliban just reiterated. they re hoping with help of the turks, they asked the turks to keep the airport open, turkish president said yesterday he was considering that, wolf. don t forget, since august 14th, pentagon announced 117,000 people have been evacuated from afghanistan, mostly afghans, of that 117,000, 5,400 americans flown out. there are hundreds more still there in afghanistan. sam kylie, barbara starr, thanks
thousands of afghans, as you know, jim, who have been trying to get out of the country, haven t been able to get out. they worked alongside u.s. troops, us diplomats, some of them even have green cards to the united states. and president biden said yesterday that his message to those afghans, if they don t get out before august 31st, is that the biden administration will continue to try to get them out of the country. but, of course, that s hinged on two things. specifically the taliban, if they re going to allow those afghans to get to the airport to go out of the country. they said they re not going to. we ll have to see if there is anyway that that changes. and then, of course, the airport itself. there is no agreement to keep that airport open. the taliban doesn t have the capability, the capacity to operate it on its own once the u.s. leaves on august 31st. so there s a number of conversations going on right now behind the scenes to try and keep that airport open. but that is a cr
31st? it s friday. that s truce. tuesday. there is still no international agreement to keep the airport open. there is a chance it could be closed for a time period around that deadline. we ll have to wait and see what the officials here have to say about that later today. dana: griff jenkins at the state department. thank you. bill: thousands of afghan allies now desperately trying to get out of that country as the situation on the ground worsens. president biden admitting not all of them will be able to leave. he said this late thursday. president biden: we ll continue to try to get you out. it matters. look, i know of no conflict, as a student of history, no conflict where, when a war is ending, one side was able to guarantee that everyone they wanted to be extracted from that country would get out. think about it, folks.
if isis k, i would be surprised if it wasn t the case, is being used by the her connie network as a cut out to attack us and humiliate us on our way out. is he right? that is very important point. we have the talent ban is knowing government, astonishing to say those words, our allies at the moment in terms of keeping the airport open until the deadline set by president biden, has been fighting between isis k, carried out this terrible attack and the taliban and so you have a multitude of groups with close links inside afghanistan. we have al qaeda who has close ties to the taliban and. we have the hqqani network
