Jaipur: The trend of sealing MLAs in hotels seems to have trickled down to the local bodies polls in Rajasthan. Recently, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) placed its winning candidates in isolation to ensure that the party wins the mayor’s position.
This was done even as the verdict of the Ajmer Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections was in favour of the BJP. Out of Ajmer Nagar Nigam’s 80 seats, the BJP won 48, while the Congress secured only 18 and the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLTP) got one. Independent candidates won 13 seats.

JAIPUR: Congress took a lead over BJP in terms of number of wards won in the municipal elections held in 20 districts, though BJP retained the Ajmer Municipal Corporation with a big margin on Sunday.
The incumbent party will, however, have to depend on independent candidates to form governing boards in many of the 90 municipal bodies for which elections were held on January 28 and the results declared on Sunday.
Polls could not be held in one of the 3035 wards in the 90 urban bodies due to the death of a Congress candidate in Bhilwara’s Gulabpura Nagar Palika. Of the 3,034 wards for which results were announced, Congress won 1,197 while the BJP won 1,140.

The results for elections to 90 urban local bodies in Rajasthan’s 20 districts have put the ruling Congress in a position of advantage, as the party expects to form the governing boards in over 50 municipal bodies with the support of Independents. The Congress has secured 1,194 of the 3,034 wards, while the BJP won 1,146 and Independent candidates bagged 631.
Though the Congress has got a clear majority in 19 municipal bodies, against BJP’s majority in 23, the Independents who will be a deciding factor in 37 urban bodies are likely to extend support to the Congress. The voting for electing chairpersons of municipal bodies will take place on February 7.

Jaipur, Jan 31 : Both Rajasthan's ruling Congress and opposition BJP claimed victory as the results for the urban local bodies elections, held in 20 districts on Thursday, were announced on Sunday.
While the Congress won a total of 1,197 seats, the BJP claimed 1,140 seats out of total 3,034 seats, said election commission officers.
The NCP won 46 seats while Independents grabbed 634 seats. The BSP won 1 seat, the CPI-M 3 seats and the RLP 13.
The elections for members for 90 municipal bodies -- one municipal corporation, 9 municipal councils and 80 municipalities -- on Thursday saw a 76.52 per cent turnout.
