MEMPHIS, Tennessee — There's been a change at the top of one of key departments for the City of Memphis.
Al Lamar is no longer the City of Memphis Solid Waste Director. He left to pursue other opportunities. Local 24 News has confirmed that Deputy Chief Operating Officer Chandell Ryan will be the Interim Solid Waste Director until a permanent Director is appointed.
When Lamar was hired in December of 2018, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said, “Mr. Lamar has spent the better part of his career managing large scale operations and will be a great fit for this new role.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The director of Memphis Solid Waste is no longer working for the city.
A statement from the city says Al Lamar “has decided to pursue other opportunities.”
Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Chandell Ryan will take over as Interim Solid Waste Director until the position is permanently filled.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Normally, the coming and going of the person in charge of getting trash picked up in Memphis would fall under the category of who cares. So you would be forgiven if you’re not familiar with the name Al Lamar - or the fact that Mayor Jim Strickland named Lamar director of the Solid Waste Division in December 2018, based on his experience managing large scale operations.

But, first, we're talking barbecue as we get ready to welcome the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, which starts Wednesday.
Jacks Woods has competed in the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest for well over a decade — including the past 11 years as the lead cook of the various teams he has been on. 
Woods competes in both the whole hog and shoulder divisions. He has a list of wins: two seconds, two thirds, three fourths, a fifth place and a ninth place.

City of Memphis Solid Waste Director Al Lamar is no longer employed by the city of Memphis, the city confirmed Monday. 
The city of Memphis said Lamar had decided to pursue "other opportunities." Deputy Chief Operating Officer Chandell Ryan will lead the solid waste department on an interim basis, the city said. 
Lamar's departure comes after the city government, and its contractors struggled to pick up trash this spring, particularly in parts of East Memphis, Cordova and Hickory Hill. The situation caused Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland to apologize multiple times and led to the city's contractor, Waste Pro, being fired and replaced on an emergency basis by Team Waste.
