THIS is how Kings School, Winchester, looked in 2000. Under the strong guidance of then-headteacher Ray Bradbury, the comprehensive school saw pupil numbers grown by almost 50 per cent in five years - up from 1,029 to 1,504, writes Ian Crump. There were fears that the expansion was unsustainable, but in 2000 the school scored one of England’s best ever Ofsted Inspection reports. The report showed the amount of pupils scoring five of more A to C grades had leapt by more than 20 points to 91 per cent. Mr Bradbury helped establish its reputation as one of the best secondary schools in the county attracting pupils from a wide area. ....
