Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Haines assembly met on on July 27 and voted unanimously to make Annette Kreitzer an offer to become the next Borough Manager, following 14 months of the community not having one. Kreitzer previously had worked with the State Department of Administration in 2007, as well as at Pole Bay in the Aleutians as a Clinic Manager. Haines Mayor, Douglas Olerud, was asked what he hopes Krieitzer will bring to the Haines community. Based on the comments from the Assembly last night, is some stability, he said. We re hoping to develop a really good working relationship between Kreitzer and the assembly, Kreitzer and the Borough employees, and the community. ....
That report in the Chilkat Valley News says the 21-year-old intern was fired as a result. Interim borough manager Alekka Fullerton told the newspaper that the student drove from Anchorage to Haines after being tested in Anchorage. He didn’t wait for his test result, according to Fullerton, and found out he tested positive after arriving in Haines on Friday, Jan. 8. Despite promises to isolate in Haines, he boarded the flight to Juneau on Sunday, January 10. He was scheduled to intern for Anchorage Representative Andy Josephson. The newspaper says the intern declined to comment. Josephson told the paper that the man who was not identified won t be interning for him. “He’s not going to be interning for me,” Josephson said. ....

Officials are holding their breath while they wait to see what happens with COVID-19 in Haines in the wake of widespread flooding and landslides that have displaced at least 50 residents and brought a large number of volunteers and emergency workers into the community in the past week. I don t know how we re going to get out of this without active cases, Haines Borough interim manager Alekka Fullerton said. It s front and center in my mind, every day.
