Russia's Luna-25 moon probe has entered lunar orbit after a successful space flight launched on Aug. 11, the first of its kind from Russia since the former Soviet Union.
Luna-25 is the first mission to land on the lunar surface since 1976. The mission is part of Russia's effort to develop its space program. It will take a year for the mission to reach the moon's south pole, where it will land on its surface. It is the second mission to the moon after the successful landing of Apollo 11 in 1969. The first mission was to the surface of the moon in 1969, and was followed by a mission to orbit the moon, also known as the Apollo 11 mission.
MOSCOW: Russia launched its first probe to the Moon in almost 50 years on Friday, a mission designed to give fresh impetus to its long-struggling space sector, which has been also hit by sanctions.
