Four men have been jailed for the manslaughter of 39 Vietnamese migrants found dead in a lorry trailer in Essex.
The migrants died excruciatingly painful deaths, having suffocated in the container en route from Belgium to Purfleet in October 2019, a judge said.
Ronan Hughes, 41, and Gheorghe Nica, 43, played leading roles in the smuggling conspiracy and were jailed for 20 and 27 years respectively.
At the Old Bailey, two lorry drivers were also jailed for manslaughter.

The seven men jailed for a people-smuggling plot that led to the deaths of 39 migrants who suffocated in an air-tight trailer each played distinct roles in the conspiracy.
Gheorghe Nica, 43, Ronan Hughes, 41, Eamonn Harrison, 24, and Maurice Robinson, 26, were sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday for the tragedy which happened on October 23 2019.
Also jailed were Christopher Kennedy, 24, Valentin Calota, 38, and Alexandru-Ovidiu Hanga, 28.
The court heard how British-Romanian Nica recruited and paid the drivers in the Romanian community to collected migrants once they reached the UK and drop them at safe houses.
The lorry driver and mechanic knew the lorry yards in Essex well and could easily identify a quiet spot to unload migrants. ....

The Old Bailey heard how they desperately tried to raise the alarm as they ran out of air before reaching British shores.
The migrants, two aged just 15, were found dead by lorry driver Maurice Robinson who collected the trailer from the docks early the next morning.
Robinson, 26, of Craigavon, and his boss Ronan Hughes, 41, of Armagh, had admitted plotting to people smuggle and 39 counts of manslaughter.
Hughes’s partner in crime Gheorghe Nica, 43, of Basildon, Essex, and Eamonn Harrison, 24, of County Down, who had collected the victims on the continent, were found guilty of the offences. ....

The ring leaders of a people smuggling gang have been sentenced to a total of 78 years in prison following the death of 39 Vietnamese men, women and children found dead in the back of lorry near the Essex side of the Dartford Crossing.

People smuggling ringleaders responsible for the manslaughter of 39 migrants found dead in a lorry container have been spared life sentences.
Ronan Hughes and Gheorghe Nica, who were convicted of the manslaughter of 39 migrants, have been jailed at the Old Bailey for 20 years and 27 years respectively.The victims, Vietnamese men, woman and children, had hoped for a better life in Britain when they agreed to pay up to £13,000 a head for a “VIP” smuggling service.
On October 22 2019, they were crammed into an airtight lorry container to be shipped from Zeebrugge to Purfleet in Essex in pitch black and sweltering conditions. ....
