Digging Deeper Into The Merseyside Reds' Draw With Leeds United

This was not an easy game to watch. The non-stop narrative over the past 24 hours has been focused on the Super League gamble that John Henry and Fenway Sports Group took, using the club that we all love in a game of chicken with UEFA rather than on the juicy match up with the always fun Leeds. A game that could have major implications for a Champions League spot next season felt hollow and fairly pointless for me and many other “legacy fans”. Despite the obvious distractions, Jürgen Klopp somehow had his side focused as they stepped onto the field, and the Reds looked lively from the off. The game ended up following a familiar pattern, however. Liverpool create lots of chances, but struggle to finish. They did manage to find a goal, but it was wiped out after conceding a late set piece goal in a second half dominated by Leeds.

Liverpool held to draw away at Leeds after late equaliser
Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw away at Leeds United in the Premier League on Monday night.
Sadio Mane gave the Reds the lead just past the half-hour mark at Elland Road following great play between Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
But they were denied the victory in the 87th minute when Diego Llorente headed in from Jack Harrison's corner.
Team news
Jürgen Klopp made two changes to his XI, with Jota and Thiago Alcantara handed starts. Nathaniel Phillips was ruled out with a minor hamstring injury, while Mohamed Salah started on the bench.

Liverpool's Champions League campaign came to an end at the quarter-final stage on Wednesday night as Real Madrid held out for a goalless draw at Anfield.
Trailing 3-1 from last week’s first leg in Spain, the Reds applied heavy pressure to the visiting rearguard throughout in an attempt to reverse the deficit.
However, despite a series of chances, Liverpool were unable to make a breakthrough, meaning Real clinched qualification for the last four of the tournament.
Team news…
Liverpool made just one change from Saturday’s win over Aston Villa, with Sadio Mane coming in for Diogo Jota.

Klopp rues Reds' wasteful finishing as Madrid roll into Champions League semis

Liverpool (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp bemoaned Liverpool’s inability to turn dominance into goals as Real Madrid held out for a 0-0 draw at Anfield on Wednesday to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League 3-1 on aggregate.
Mohamed Salah and Georginio Wijnaldum were guilty of wasting glorious opportunities to get Klopp’s men back into the tie as they failed to replicate a remarkable recovery from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate at the semi-final stage two years ago.
“We didn’t lose the tie tonight. We lost it definitely in Madrid but even if we drew there 0-0, we would probably still be playing because we didn’t score,” said Klopp, whose side now face a battle just to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Liverpool (AFP) – Liverpool were left to rue a host of missed chances as Real Madrid held out for a 0-0 draw at Anfield to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League 3-1 on aggregate.
Mohamed Salah and Georginio Wijnaldum were guilty of wasting glorious opportunities to get Jurgen Klopp’s men back into the tie as they failed to replicate a remarkable recovery from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate at the semi-final stage two years ago.
Madrid were far from their best, but did not need to be to set up a semi-final clash with Chelsea as Los Blancos extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 14 games.

Liverpool, as expected on home soil, made the early running with Thibaut Courtois denying Mohamed Salah inside two minutes then repelling James Milner's curling effort.
Karim Benzema's deflected drive struck the post from a rare Madrid counter before Georginio Wijnaldum blazed over another presentable chance for the hosts before the break.
Courtois was forced into action by Roberto Firmino at the start of the second period but, in truth, the Belgian goalkeeper was seldom troubled thereafter as Zinédine Zidane's well-drilled defence quelled Liverpool's advances and booked a semi-final tie with Chelsea.

Real frustrate Liverpool to reach Champions League semi

(Real Madrid win 3-1 on aggregate)
Liverpool exited the Champions League with a whimper having failed to properly test Real Madrid in a goalless draw at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp's side paid the price for a disastrous 45 minutes in the Spanish capital last week as that 3-1 quarter-final first-leg defeat essentially put them out.
They created enough chances to have clawed back the two-goal deficit but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was hardly extended as yet another wasteful performance from their forwards proved costly with 15 attempts producing just four on target.
But this was a controlled, disciplined performance from the 13-time European champions who knew exactly what was required to get the job done and they will play Chelsea in the semi-finals.

Knockout blow? Liverpool need a summer like 2018 if they are to return to the top

Not so long ago, the talk was of dynasties, of a new era of dominance on Merseyside. Liverpool were the team to beat and the team to catch, the “mentality giants” and the “champions of everything”.
Klopp’s smile could have lit up the Albert Dock, his fist pumps enough to power the Mersey ferry.
Things have changed since. Liverpool may have climbed “back on their perch” when clinching the Premier League title last June, but they did not stay there long. Life comes at you fast, even at the top of a mountain.
The league crown which had taken 30 years to arrive was surrendered within seven months, the Reds’ season unravelling during a bleak winter, buried beneath a raft of injuries, hard-luck stories and a quite alarming slump in form.

Keylor Navas: Where does PSG star rank among world's best goalkeepers?

The most decorated played at the Parc des Princes isn’t Kylian Mbappe or Neymar or even Angel Di Maria. Indeed, Paris Saint-Germain’s most successful player in terms of major honours won is Keylor Navas, who is a three-times Champions League winner. He, more than anyone else at the club, knows what it takes to be a European champion.
Yet Navas is often overlooked as one of PSG’s best, and most important, players. This was highlighted by the Costa Rican’s performance in the Champions League quarter final against Bayern Munich, when he was required to make a number of crucial saves. An inferior goalkeeper would have buckled.

Liverpool vs. Real Madrid - Football Match Report - April 14, 2021

Real Madrid knocked out Liverpool to reach the Champions League semifinals following a 0-0 draw at Anfield on Wednesday which gave them a 3-1 aggregate victory.
Before match, Liverpool issued an apology after Madrid's bus suffered a broken window when an object was thrown at it en route to Anfield.
Liverpool were hoping to replicate their comeback from two seasons ago when overturned a 3-0 first-leg defeat against Barcelona to reach the Champions League final, though on this occasion they did not have the Anfield crowd to urge them on.
Determined to get that early goal, Liverpool came out of the blocks quickly and Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum were guilty of missing good chances in the first half, while Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois pulled off some impressive saves.

Real Madrid had a 3-1 lead to maintain after a really strong first leg showing, but they now had to travel to the famous Anfield Stadium to book their place in the Champions League semi-finals. A weekend El Clásico win to boost league title hopes will have done Los Blancos the world of good, and confidence would be sky high coming into the game. However, Madrid were still without multiple key players and had to start the match with Fede Valverde at right-back after Lucas Vázquez was confirmed to be out for the season. Besides that change, the team was similar to the side that beat Liverpool last week, as well as the one that overcame Barcelona. Castilla players Víctor Chust, Marvin Park and Sergio Arribas returned to the bench for this one.

LONDON: Manchester City’s march to the Premier League title stalled on Saturday as 10-man Leeds beat the runaway leaders 2-1, while Liverpool ended a six-game losing streak at Anfield when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late strike sealed a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
Chelsea moved back ahead of Liverpool in the battle for a place in next season’s Champions League, though, as the Blues thrashed Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park.
City are counting down to their third title in four seasons, but Stuart Dallas’ stoppage-time strike leaves them still needing 11 points from their last six games to clinch the crown.
