20% of rural workers living on a meal a day, says agricultural workers' body | India News

NEW DELHI: About 20% of rural labourers are living on one meal a day and several are starving, the All India Agricultural Workers’ Union (AIAWU) said on Tuesday, even as it termed as ‘delayed’ the Supreme Court judgment directing the Centre to implement the ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ scheme and set up the portal for registering unorganised and migrant workers by July 31.
AIAWU said it endorsed the SC view that the “Centre’s delay in not putting up a portal shows it is not alive to the concerns of migrant workers” and added that the government must release enough foodgrain to states.

Women Farmers Being Denied Their Due: Activists

Women Farmers Being Denied Their Due: Activists
But the government claims support and assistance to women farmers provided over and above male farmers under several schemes
Representational
Mar 11, 2021
Despite the contribution of women to farming, their labour is seldom recognized and they hardly get the benefit of schemes, point out activists.
Days after farmers protesting against the Centre’s three new agriculture laws celebrated “Women Farmers’ Day”, many say it is time for equal opportunity and rights.
According to the Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch, women farmers attend to 75% of agriculture-related work, yet own only 12% of farmland.
The Left-leaning All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has been demanding that women farmers should also be recognized as farmers, “but the government is not ready to accept this,” alleged Subhashini Ali in a newsletter.

Women show their support for the farmers
Agricultural workers across India will protest today and tomorrow, January 7 and 8, in solidarity with the ongoing struggle of farmers against the contentious farm laws.
As part of the call given by All India Agricultural Workers’ Union (AIAWU), president A Vijayaraghavan and general secretary B Venkat have appealed to the agricultural workers to hold protests at the village, panchayat, block and district levels as well as at the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme workplaces.
Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and recently joined by farmers from Maharashtra, have been protesting against the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act at five borders of the national capital for over a month.

Farmers' tractor march deferred to Thurs, talks may yield no result

Farmers' tractor march deferred to Thurs, talks may yield no result
KT NEWS SERVICE. Dated: 12/30/2020 10:38:26 AM
NEW DELHI, Dec 29: Ahead of their talks with the government on Wednesday, the protesting farmer unions on Tuesday deferred the farmers' tractor march into the national capital against the contentious farm laws to ensure it does not clash with the talks, sixth in the round of negotiations going on since November 26 with no give and take by either side.
The two sides will be on the negotiation table after three weeks of deadlock since December 8 night when Home Minister Amit Shah stepped in but without any success as the farmers did not buy his offers on MSP and other issues, insisting on repeal of the laws as the only condition to end the agitation.
