The Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert's April meeting will feature as speakers, David and Gayle Woodruff, Owens Valley historians, presenting a special slide-show, "Wedding of the Waters." The meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m.at the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd. In October of 1937, Father John Crowley, the Desert Padre, presided over a magnificent three-day pageant---one of the grandest events to have ever taken place in the Eastern Sierra. Over 50,000 people watched in amazement, as a special gourd of water was moved from the highest lake in the United States, to the lowest spot in the western hemisphere. This mighty feat was accomplished by a host of distinguished characters: film celebrity, Hop Along Cassidy, a former Indianapolis 500 winner, the 20-Mule Team Wagon and many more. President Franklin Roosevelt and California Governor, Frank Finley Merriam also participated in this historic occasion. The Woodruffs will share a 55-minute slide-show presentation featuring many rare and seldom-seen images of this amazing event. David and Gayle Woodruff have lived in Death Valley and the Eastern Sierra area for most of their lives. They are the authors of eight books on Death Valley and Eastern Sierra history, including the popular "Tales Along El Camino Sierra" series (which will be available for purchase on the day of the presentation). The couple also serve as presenters of a variety of local and regional history programs. When not researching or writing, they can be found hiking in their beloved Sierra Nevada Mountains. The HSUMD meets on the third Tuesday of the month, except for July and August. Each meeting will feature a presentation on some aspect of local history. Meetings are free, and all are welcome to attend.
