Former Christian Standard editor Sam E. Stone passed away from cardiac failure on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, at the age of 84. Over a lifetime of Christian ministry, Sam served as a preacher of the gospel in Ohio and Missouri, academic dean of Cincinnati Christian Seminary, Bible college professor, president of the North American Christian Convention, world missions advocate, author, and advocate for the developmentally disabled. SAM E. STONE He served as Christian Standard editor for 25 years, from 1978 to 2003, the longest tenure in the magazine’s 154-year history. The New Mexico native graduated from Ozark Bible College, Joplin, Mo., and also earned degrees from Cincinnati Bible Seminary. ....

JAMES 4:15 About halfway through my freshman year at Ozark Bible College, I became very ill. My parents sent a telegram that they would come to Joplin to help, but the message was a puzzle. It concluded with an unusual abbreviation. “Will arrive tomorrow about 6:00 p.m., TLW.” Several student and faculty friends tried to figure it out. Could TLW be short for Trailways Bus? Could it mean TWA, and just be a typo? At length my parents arrived about 6:00 p.m. the next day ....

Taylor Ralph Small, vice president and publisher at Standard Publishing, called me into his office in 1977 to tell me he was considering Sam Stone to follow Edwin Hayden as editor of Christian Standard. I still remember his description of Sam, “A steel hand inside a velvet glove.” It’s an apt metaphor for a Christian leader driven by unyielding Christian conviction who led a fellowship of churches by advocating strong principles as he demonstrated unfailing love. ....

The combination of civil war, tidal wave, and cyclone had left this grandfather and thousands like him without food and shelter. As the newscaster reported from Bangladesh in 1972, his closing remarks were, “Can anybody help these people?” In Marion, Indiana, a man by the name of Milton B. Bates was watching the telecast. His answer to the newscaster was, “Where is the church of Christ? The church is missing the boat. We should be helping these victims of disaster.” ....
