TOKYO – U.S. military commands in Japan and South on Thursday reported eight new coronavirus infections going back to mid-April.
Meanwhile, Tokyo announced another 591 infections , continuing a trend of declining case numbers, according to public broadcaster NHK. However, the number of people stricken severely by COVID-19, the coronavirus respiratory disease, rose to 72 on Wednesday, the first time that number has exceeded 70 since February. ....

U.S. Forces Korea and three military commands in Japan have announced plans to expand their vaccination programs to anyone 18 and older who is eligible in the military health care system.
Meanwhile, Japan’s second most populous prefecture on Wednesday reported its highest one-day total of new coronavirus patients. Osaka prefecture announced another 878 newly infected people, exceeding the previous one-day record, 719, set Tuesday, according to public broadcaster NHK and prefectural data. ....

Vaccine supplies, base populations dictate when US troops in Japan can receive coronavirus shots

TOKYO – U.S. Army Japan on Saturday began inoculating the families of Defense Department civilian employees and contractors against the coronavirus at its Camp Zama headquarters and nearby installations.
That put the Army out front among U.S. military commands in Japan that are administering the vaccine in order of descending priorities, starting with frontline health workers down to healthy members of the military population, including family members.
By contrast, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni began its first phase of inoculations Tuesday after receiving an initial Moderna vaccine shipment the previous day, according to its Facebook page. ....

U.S. Forces Korea will start administering the Moderna vaccine against the coronavirus to frontline health care workers and first responders “over the next few days,” the USFK commander, Gen. Robert Abrams, announced Tuesday.
In a message on the USFK website, Abrams said the command would receive additional shipments of the vaccine to inoculate all USFK-affiliated community members as production and distribution increases.” ....
