a tornado has killed at least 23 people in the us state of mississippi, which is located here, in the south of the country. the authorities said the twister left a trail of damage for more than 150 kilometres. one of the worst affected towns is rolling fork, where trees and power lines have been torn down. at one point, debris was being pulled more than 6000 metres into the sky. you can see here the latest pictures of the destruction in rolling fork. debris everywhere, cars on top of what used to be buildings. complete and utter devastation. lots and lots of torn down buildings. as the rescue operation takes place as people start to think about the cleaning operation, many people there will have lost their homes, their livelihoods. and we understand there are some survivors that police and rescue services are still looking for. president biden has called the mississippi storms heartbreaking and vowed federal support. here s our north america correspondent, david willi ....

chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. rick: good morning, the town of rolling fork has about 1,750 people so imagine a small town like that everybody knows everybody, and now you re going to have everybody who knows somebody if you weren t yourself impacted by the storm. it s going to be a really rough day for people as the sun comes up just exactly one hour from now. this year has been a really active tornado season. we ve had 282 tornadoes. typically so far in the season we would have 174 tornadoes, and you get a look at that. this is just your statistical averages. march right there, we are headed into our what is generally really active months of april and may and june. doesn t mean that ll be the case this year but certainly that trend has been the case. all of this has been those storm s that have been coming across california, have made their way across parts of the south where its been really warm, above average temperatures for a long time, and those temps are st ....
warnings that could persist right through the weekend, severe storm, even tornado type the possibilities. rick reichmuth following all of that. are rick, what are we looking at? rick: rolling fork is really the first town to get hit by this. they don t have any cell service. a lot of the cell towers have been taken offline, so it s the hard to get any communication in and out, we re having a hard time getting reporters to be able to talk to us about exactly what they re seeing. this is a look at the storms. this one right here, that s the path of what was likely the strongest of the storms last night, and you see touching ground just to the east of the mississippi river about 4 or 5 miles east, that s where that town is, rolling fork, and watch that line of storms. that one tornado probably on the ground maybe up to the about 100 miles or so. now they ll go out and investigate that today, as they re doing that, weather good. 9 all the search and rescue efforts that are ....
