Simulations Plus Increases Net Income 49 Percent | San Fernando Valley Business Journal

Drug modeling software company Simulations Plus Inc. beat analyst estimates for its second fiscal quarter, with net income increasing a whopping 49 percent.
The Lancaster-based company, which makes a platform used by the pharmaceutical industry for drug research and development, reported an adjusted net income of $3.2 million (15 cents a share) for the quarter ended Feb. 28, compared to adjusted net income of $2.15 million (12 cents) for the same quarter a year ago. Revenue increased 27 percent year over year to $13.1 million.
Analysts had expected earnings of 14 cents a share on revenue of $12.9 million, according to Zacks Consensus Estimate.
“While we expect growth to normalize in the second half of our fiscal year, and are maintaining our full-year growth targets of 15 to 20 percent, this first-half performance underscores the strength and diversification of our business model,” Shawn O’Connor, chief executive at Simulations Plus, said during a conference call on Monday.

California Lutheran University economists Matthew Fienup and Dan Hamilton have received the Zillow Home Price Expectations Survey’s 2020 Crystal Ball Award — the second year in a row the duo has been recognized on the national stage.
Fienup and Hamilton work at Cal Lutheran’s Center for Economic Research and Forecasting in Westlake Village. The Center’s U.S. housing market forecast was among the top three in accuracy of more than 100 reports included in the survey.
“At CERF, our goal is to provide objective, clear-eyed forecasts that reflect what economic theory and state of the art forecasting tools reveal. We see our role as one of calling balls and strikes, rather than advocating for a preferred outcome,” Fienup said in a statement. “The 2020 Crystal Ball award is validation of that approach.”

Regional Nonprofits for Developmentally Disabled Merge | San Fernando Valley Business Journal

Developmental disability nonprofit AbilityFirst this week announced it has completed a merger with fellow Pasadena nonprofit FVO Solutions Inc.
AbilityFirst, which has a location in Glendale, will now offer expanded support services to more than 2,000 people in the Greater Los Angeles market. The merged company will operate under the AbilityFirst name.
“Through our enhanced programs we offer people with developmental disabilities employment preparation, training and experience needed to lead full productive lives,” Lori Gangemi, chief executive of AbilityFirst, said in a statement. “After thoughtful discussion and due diligence, we celebrate a major milestone having merged with FVO Solutions.”
ExploreAbility, DiscoverAbility and PossAbility are three new programs offered as a result of the merger. The first addition is a licensed adult day care program; the second provides a way for participants to set goals and gain more independence. PossAbility will focus on helping participants find the right job.

Afrezza Quarterly Sales Increase, New Therapies on Horizon at MannKind | San Fernando Valley Business Journal

MannKind Corp. touted increased sales for its flagship drug Afrezza during its fourth quarter earnings report on Thursday, while pointing out its new direction toward therapies for lung and endocrine diseases.
During the quarter, MannKind pulled in $10.1 million in revenue for Afrezza, its inhalable insulin, a 30 percent increase compared to sales in the same quarter of 2019.
The Westlake Village biotech company reported an adjusted net loss of $13.2 million (-6 cents a share). That’s narrower than the net loss of $14.3 million (-7 cents) in the same period a year earlier. Revenue was $18.4 million, an increase from $16 million the same quarter the previous year.
