Ask SAM: When will my state tax refund be issued?

Millions of Americans are expecting a tax refund. Many will use it on things like bills, debt and other essentials. If you don’t have any pressing financial matters to pay for at the moment, you may look at investing it in your future. PennyGem’s Johana Restrepo has more.
Q: Can you get us an update on when we might expect our NC State tax refund? We submitted our tax digitally March 5 and have checked the NCDOR web site with no adequate explanation. This is unacceptable and irresponsible for us to not have our refund yet.

Wouldn’t media be different if each item of bad news was balanced by one of good news?
You’d say there is no good news. Nonsense!
There’s people helping people before, during and after COVID, overcoming impossible health complications, surgeons saving lives of infants with life threatening defects, young people succeeding despite poor childhoods, release of prisoners wrongfully convicted, daring rescues, survivors of terrible  calamities, miracles of human perseverance.

Flotsam & Jetsam: Cookie-selling record and still dreaming big

Lilly Bumpus, age 8, sold a record 32,484 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies this season from a booth she set up in front of her San Bernardino, California, home. Most of her sales were to people buying one to four boxes, according to her mother, Trish Bauer. A cancer survivor herself, Lilly also collected donation orders online for patients at various area children’s hospitals. “She sold her … heart out,” Bauer said. “It’s Lilly being Lilly. She doesn’t like being told that something is not possible.” (Not for you, Lilly.)

Goodwill employee finds massive sum of cash in donation, helps return money to owner

ATLANTA (CNN) — Andrea Lessing had seen a lot of unique donations in her time as an Oklahoma Goodwill employee, but none nearly as valuable as $42,000 in cash.
Lessing had been sorting through a pile of donations at the Norman Goodwill location when she felt something odd between two sweaters. As she unwrapped the sweaters, she found that what she suspected to be books were in fact stacks of cash.
"My first thought was that it was fake. We've seen $5 and $20 donated here and there, but never in my life had I seen that much money," Lessing said in an interview.

Chiu has been feeding about 10 elderly folks in the Chinatown neighborhood for over three months. He said he makes sure the elderly community eats well. This week he cooked up unagi don tamago and California rolls.
